By selecting a woman as his VP pick over another geriatric male, McCain has given himself a real shot at the White House (which I really don't think he had before)... I'm sure those with political aptitude could have predicted this, but I was stunned.
This means that NO MATTER WHAT, we will either have a woman or a person of color in the white house. NO MATTER WHAT, America will finally cut the cord on a very shameful run of discrimination in our country's highest offices. I feel so much better about the world today just because of this it feels a little surreal.
I can't tell you how awful it feels to overhear your daughter on the phone to her friend telling them that no, she can't be President because you have to be a man to hold that office. I can contradict her until I'm blue in the face, but really - what chance do I have against 200 years of history? I can imagine the same impression in children of races other than caucasian.
I'm still voting for Obama, but I no longer feel as though he's a shoe-in. McCain just did the smartest thing he could have possibly done to get Hilary supporters on his side - because let's face it, a lot of Hilary supporters were on board so hard-core because she was a woman. I personally felt that the gender and race issue in the White House was a real voting issue. And if Colin Powell or Condi Rice had been the presidential nominee for President on the GOP side against a white male on the DFL side, I very well might have voted GOP - JUST to smash the barrier. JUST to be a part of change that has been far too long in coming.
I feel like America has been an embarrasing hold-out in a world where most developed nations got wise long ago.
It's a new world.
