Goodbyes
I saw you today, and lifted my chin.
You smiled and waved.
My smile stretched thin,
Because the attention you laved
Came far too late.
No more will I wait.
Yesterday, you thought of me,
It made you smile, so you say.
And said so very convincingly!
A hug, and off on your way,
Separate from me, you go.
If I'll ever see you again, I don't know.
Tomorrow I'll finally work up the nerve.
That you love me or hate me, I won't care.
And I'll tell you that with vigor and verve;
This loneliness will be yours to bear.
And I will be utterly filled with peace;
My heart no longer yours to lease.
Goodbyes come in all forms:
Happy and sad and bitter and sweet.
Sometimes my tears come in storms;
And others, they trickle down in trails neat.
Occasionally, I'm happy to see you gone,
Though I'll feel empty come the dawn.
Goodbye to a person, a time, a place...
Goodbye to a relationship stage.
To the scowl that marks my face,
And the anger I nurture, hate, rage.
Sometimes, it's needful to say goodbye,
If only so I can give something new a try.
