Leaving A Review

Do writers enjoy when people leave actual feed back in a review? Or do they just enjoy the praise of their characters and writing style? Would an author or write be offended if a review wrote a negative comment about their stories but actually tried to leave advice and indicate what about the story they did not like?

I always try to comment on stories, no matter if I like them or not. A couple of days ago I received a response to my comment that I had left. My comment said that though I had liked the idea and the original concept of the story, I felt that it took too long for the writer to begin the actual story itself and spent too much time on background. I had said that I can't truly be interested in a background without likable characters to make me want to understand their world. The writer was no thrilled with what I said and then proceeded to insult me and defend their story.

Was I wrong to say what I felt?
