Recently the UN appointed a Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Belarus (Mr. Miklós Haraszti, from Hungary).
The mandate of the Special Rapporteur is the following:
- to monitor the situation of human rights in Belarus and to make recommendations for its improvement; I hope you
- to help to implement the recommendations contained in the report of the High Commissioner;
- to assist the Government of Belarus in fulfilling its human rights obligations;
- to offer support and advice to civil society;
- to seek, receive, examine and act on information from all relevant stakeholders pertaining to the situation of human rights in Belarus; and
- to report annually to the Human Rights Council and to the General Assembly in accordance with their respective programmes of work-
In light of the above, it will be important to submit information to the Special Rapporteur and this can be used as a further avenue to put pressure on the government. The information for the Rapporteur can be forwarded to this address: sr-belarus@ohchr.org.
