Joy Harjo

I saw Joy Harjo, a famous Muskogee/Creek poet, perform today at UCSB's Multicultural Center. She was awesome. I usually am not that into poetry, but there was something about her performance that just worked. She alternatively read poetry, sang, and played the saxophone ("a traditional Muskogee/Creek instrument"). It all flowed together and was amazing. I'm going to sound so New Age when I say this, but it was honestly very healing. It was medicine.

She dedicated the perfomance to Vine Deloria, Jr., a--or the--predominant scholar of Native American religions, who passed away this past Sunday (see http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/16/national/16deloria.html).
