Pat hates it when Johnny rattles off in French if there’s anyone even looks like they might speak the damned language in the area. He knows Johnny likes to keep up with his other tongue and that languages are like muscles, you’ve gotta use ‘em or lose ‘em, but it still ticks him off. It just reminds him that he only speaks English with the exception of a few choice curse words he’s picked up from Hossa and Hjalmarsson over the years.

He doesn’t really want to admit that it’s actually jealousy or that he’s a nosy jerk, because that isn’t it at all. It isn’t that he wants to know everything his best friend is saying, he just feels a little left out. Like a third wheel, except a bit more useless and slightly agitated.

Really, Pat’s been glowering at his captain since his conversation with a fellow Canadian began and Johnny’s starting to notice it out of the corner of his eye. And when Pat realizes that Johnny sees him, he makes a disgruntled noise and marches off to the locker room.

It isn’t a fan thing either, not really. He’s got just as many fans as Captain Serious. Pat just doesn’t like that Johnny can talk to them without much effort and getting Johnny to talk to him is like pulling teeth sometimes. It isn’t jealousy.

Pat isn’t paying attention to what he’s doing when he sits down and starts unlacing his skates, so he doesn’t know that he’s sitting in Johnny’s booth instead of his own until the Glorious Canadian Captain is standing in front of him looking confused.

“Hey,” Johnny greets him, “You okay?”

“I’m peachy.”

Pat tries not to sound snappy, but it comes through a little in his tone and he winces. Johnny’s expression is just as stoney as ever when Pat looks up from his skates for a second and he goes right back to unlacing.

“You know you’re in my seat?” Johnny says, ignoring the fact that Pat is obviously disturbed by something.

It only serves to piss Pat up a bit more and the smaller man clenches his jaw and slides along the bench, going a bit further than his own spot to put more distance between them.

Hearing Johnny speak French to some puck bunny doesn’t just make Pat feel jealous, it’s like an insult to his intelligence. It’s an irrational, ridiculous way of looking at a normal situation, but Pat can’t really explain why he feels the way he does. He just knows that he’s irritated and that it’s Johnny’s fault.

“You coming over later?” Johnny makes one last attempt at conversation, but the scowl he receives in return answers the question for him.

They finish getting out of their gear in silence, Johnny somehow stripping down to his underclothes before Pat and heading into the showers. At this point, Pat kinda wants to apologize because the awkward silence thing is starting to grate on his nerves even more than Johnny’s tendency to encourage the French speaking puck bunnies, but he isn’t that big of a person.

Showering is just as unpleasant as sitting next to each other in silence and by the time they’re both dressed and tossing their gear into backpacks, Johnny’s ready to tear his hair out. It comes as no surprise when he corners Pat on the way out.

“What the hell is your problem, Kaner?” he grumbles, his arms crossed over his chest. Pat can tell how confused Johnny is by the way he chews the inside of his lip and it makes him feel guilty for having caused it.

“I’m just tired, okay?” Pat says wearily, “Practice kinda sucked and-”

Pat cuts himself off and Johnny releases a sigh.

“And- ?” Johnny continues for him, “And you’re pissed at me because I what? Abandoned you to socialize with some fans?”

Pat bites back the first sarcastic remark that pops into his head and he shakes his head. Unfortunately, Johnny knows him well enough to tell when he’s lying and a smile cracks across his features.

“Thought so,” Tazer sighs, putting his hands on Kaner’s shoulders, “I know you’ve got problems talking with girls, Pat, but you should let it bother our friendship. I can’t help that I’m such a stud-”

“Oh, shut up,” Pat interrupts, slapping Tazer’s hands away as the captain begins to laugh and Pat can’t help but laugh along with him, “You’re an idiot.”

They’re both idiots sometimes, but maybe that’s why they work so well together.
