«Down came the rain that day
And I am remembering your face
And those things you like to say»
When the rain started coming down, Nicky walked straight out the back door into the yard, cool grass brushing at his bare feet. Even when the sky darkened into a foreboding black and the gentle drizzle turned to pricks of ice biting at his skin, he didn’t budge.

The pain grounded him. It diverted his thoughts to something that wasn’t the growing throb in his chest. He could feel his world falling to pieces and it was so difficult to keep up a shield of apathy any longer. Letting himself feel this pain, something tangible, made it easier to ignore his own short comings.

He couldn’t handle the guilt, it was too much.

Thunder cracked and the ground shook seconds before a blinding flash of lightning. Maybe it would strike him and then this could just be over. But the patio door slammed open behind him and the clumsy thumping of Mike fighting to get his boots on made the feeling grow worse. And before Mike even reached him, he knew he wouldn’t be able to hide it anymore.

“Jesus fucking christ,” Mike cursed, taking him by the arm and all but dragging him along back into the house. “What the fuck are you doing? Are you trying to get sick?”

His skin burned from where Mike’s fingers had curled around his forearm. He didn’t answer.

“Nicky? What’s up?” Mike’s tone changed from mildy annoyed to worried when Nicky let his eyes flutter closed and a few tears escaped down his cheeks.

“I have something to tell you.”

Nicky never was one for keeping secrets.

Yael Naim - Far Far
Ovechkin | Semin

«So shake it yourself now deep inside
Deeper than you ever dared
Deeper than you ever dared
There's a beautiful mess inside»
Sometimes they dance just for the hell of it. Alex puts on some kind of obnoxious techno and starts bouncing on the balls of his feet in the kitchen at some ungodly hour and all Sasha can do is drag himself out of bed and try to coax him back to the bedroom. Usually it just ends with both of them staying up too late and waking up even later in a room that smells like vodka and sex.

But tonight’s different. It isn’t the typical loud throbbing bass and electronic voice, it’s something more gentle with acoustic guitar and Sasha doesn’t know exactly what it is but it peaks his interest.

There’s an orange glow visible even in the hall and he knows something’s up when he catches the sight of candles on the kitchen table, but Alex is no where to be seen. He does, however, find a chocolate covered cherry at his place on the table and underneath is a pink sticky note with a lopsided heart drawn in sharpie.

He smiles and shakes his head as he pops the candy into his mouth, mostly because Alex is being ridiculous and romantic in a way he hasn’t been in a long time, but also because he really should have seen this coming when Alex insisted on staying up extra late knowing there’s a game tomorrow.

Sasha traces over the heart with one finger. It truly is horribly drawn but he doesn’t care. The only thing that keeps him from jumping when Alex’s arms wrap around his middle is the telltale creak of the hardwood floors, and then he’s being turned around and Alex’s mouth is pressed to his and they’re moving slowly in a dance that isn’t really a dance as much as it is a gentle sway.

“What do you think? I did good, yeah?”

Alex looks so pleased with himself and Sasha knows he’s been swept off his feet as soon as Alex leans in for another kiss. It’s slow and passionate in a way that makes Sasha feel like he’s being made love to even though they’re both fully dressed and he gasps into Alex’s mouth when chill hands begin to slide up the back of his shirt.

“I think we should blow out the candles and go to bed,” he murmurs back and Alex hums in agreement.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Over the Rainbow
Ovechkin | Semin

«Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind
Be where troubles melt like lemon drops
Way above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me»
The stars glimmer far above in the sky, a testament to just how vast the cosmos is. There’s a glimmer of orange and red as a shooting star cuts through the darkness and Sasha feels Alex’s lips curving into a smile on his bare shoulder.

“You see that?” he asks, reaching up to twist Sasha’s long hair around his fingers. “Make a wish.”

They’re curled up on a lounge chair that’s much too small for two full grown hockey players, but it hasn’t buckled under their weight yet and sitting separate isn’t really an option when it’s freezing outside. One of Alex’s arms is draped comfortingly around Sasha’s hips, his fingertips occasionally stroking the soft skin right above his pajama pants. He lingers on a love bite right where his hipbone disappears under cloth, his thumb moving in circles around the red mark.

It’s still a little tender, but Sasha doesn’t ask Alex to stop. Rather, he leans in to press their lips together, biting softly at his lover’s lower lip before pulling away.

“I already have the only thing I want.”

Alex holds him closer, kisses the tip of his nose and whispers something under his breath, just barely loud enough for Sasha to hear.

“I love you.”

They try to fight off sleep, but it grows increasingly more difficult as the sky begins to turn a soft shade of red. Practice is early today, but this is more important- being together. Always together.

«You were always the one to be easily misunderstood
Then in the dark you would cry, making sure nobody heard »
“Don’t-” Mike wrenched away from Nicky’s touch. “Just don’t. Fucking- I’m going out for a while, don’t call me.”

Nicklas watched Mike jam his wallet into his back pocket and snatch his keys up from the table before storming away. He heard the door open and slam shut, but he didn’t move from his place by the kitchen window. Even when he heard the rumble of MIke’s car starting up and then the screech of his tires as he peeled out of the driveway, he could barely even bring himself to breathe.

It had just been once- one time and never again. They’d been drunk- he told Mike that. He said he was sorry and he meant it. It had been a mistake.

The worst part was that he didn’t even really know what Mike was more upset about- the fact that he’d been unfaithful or that it had been with Alex. After all, he’d known Mike had feelings for the captain for years, he just thought he’d be the one to make Mike forget about Alex.

All he managed to do in the end was turn into someone he didn’t even recognize anymore.

Young the Giant - Cough Syrup
Halpern | Beagle

«Life's too short to even care at all oh
I'm losing my mind losing my mind losing control»
There are few things Jay hates more than having nothing to do and since being concussed, he’s been doing a helluva lot of nothing. The only saving grace to his injury is that he’s had more time to socialize with members of the team he never really connected with before.

Like Jeff, for example. The older forward has really started growing on him over the past month and even though he thought Jeff was pretentious and overbearing at first, he’s really got a soft spot for him. It could possibly be the fact that the veteran has consistently given him something to on his days off, albeit in the form of cleaning up after his fuck-ups and that one time he had to go buy a new set of curtains to replace the ones Jeff somehow burned to a pile of ash.

And it doesn't really help that Jay's outrageously clumsy all on his own to begin with.

But it could just as easily be that he’s addicted to Jeff’s mouth. That little scar on his lip, for example, holds his attention better than the puck on a penalty kill does on a good day and he feels like that should disturb him for some reason even though he’d rather it not.

He likes the way one corner of Jeff’s mouth twitches just a little further up than the other when he smiles too, and the way he bites his lower lip when he’s trying not to laugh. His favorite part, however, is the way they feel pressed against his own lips. They’re softer than they look and for some reason, he always tastes a little like cherries and he thinks it’s because of the lip balm he uses, but Jeff isn’t going to fess up to using cherry flavored anything.

The point, however, is that Jeff tastes like something delicious and it’s wrong on so many levels that Jay knows it but he’s past the point of caring. He just wants more of Jeff pressed up against him, tongue sliding into his mouth and fingers prying at the button of his jeans like it’s okay to be doing this after practice when everyone else has already left.

He loves the sounds Jeff makes when he turns the tables on him, using his advantage in height and weight to all but manhandle him up against the wall- that breathy gasp of surprise never fails to send a shudder down his spine. And it always melts into a low moan when he slides his thigh between Jeff’s legs and just grinds against him.

It isn’t sex and that almost makes this okay even though it’s wrong to even look at each other sideways at this point.

As much as Jay tells himself it’s only until he’s back on the ice, he knows deep inside that it isn’t and even if he wanted it to be, something tells him Jeff isn't going to be so easy to get away from.
