It was after the third time Alfred had pulled at his scarf and the second time he'd thrown a half-eaten cheeseburger at him before stomping off with tightly held back tears in his eyes that Ivan went to Yao for advice.
"What did I ever do to deserve such attentions?" Ivan complained "And please don't bring up the Cold War, that was the politicians' fault, not mine."
Yao sighed and shook his head.
"You have to be patient with Alfred, he's still very young." Yao said. "He didn't have nearly as much time as most other countries to grow up."
"But what does that have to do with his incessant poking at me?" Ivan asked.
"What does a young boy do when he likes someone?" And with that parting advice Yao left to write more for his novel.
Ivan frowned as he watched Matthew chase Raivis around the yard. It wasn't until Raivis fell down and skinned his knee, prompting Matthew to kiss it better that it really clicked in his head.
"Hey, What's up?" Said Alfred after the next meeting, tugging on the end of Ivan's scarf.
Ivan just smiled, reached over and gently tugged on Alfred's tie before turning and walking away. If he'd looked back he would have seen Alfred standing there blushing, absentmindedly stroking his tie.
A minute later a smile crosses Alfred's face and he walks away humming a song that some might recognize as Joan Jetts' 'I love Rock and Roll' as he plots his next course of action in getting Ivan to like him back.
