I think that education is very important. When I say education I mean obtaining new skills and knowledge, self-development, not just getting a degree.
I have always been working as a journalist, but I never learned how to. I just did it! And I should say I don't write worse than people graduated from a local university with a degree in journalism. I have a strong belief that you can never teach a person to write. Some people are meant to write, they just can not live without writing. That's what makes journalists or writers different.
Another source of my income is translation work. I don't make much doing it, but still do it occasionally. I have never gone to college for languages, either. All my skills of English come from high school and self-education.
I have a degree in marketing, though. I have worked as a marketing manager for a few months and didn't like it. But I don't regret that I got this bachelor's degree. It was good experience, some aspects of marketing are useful in daily life. And getting a degree was free like nearly all education in Russia.
Of course degrees and diplomas, especially ones from famous and expensive universities open doors of a big business and success. But what about people who (like me) can not afford all that luxery education?
Self-education is an answer. Nowadays with this global network called Internet we have a lot of opportunities to study! Learning languages's become easier, too :)
In my opinion anyone can learn a language without any courses or teachers. If you've just started you would probably need a tutor. Later on you can continue studying it on your own.
