He honestly didn't mean to kill her.
Yes, so he meant to kill the Slayer. Well...thought about it, at least. Even he knew that it would take more than a gunshot to kill a Slayer. They healed so quickly that it was barely more than a distraction to them. He was kind of hoping that -if he shot enough bullets in random directions and then made a run for it- her entire posse would come chasing after him, meaning that Andrew and Jonathan had enough time to escape from the police cell.
It was only supposed to be a distraction.
Unfortunately, he hadn't reckoned on the blonde witch being there. And he really hadn't reckoned on her taking a bullet. If he had, he would have felt like he deserved to be dead. Not the way Willow was planning -and he knows her name, from a maths class so long ago where she was dating the guitarist and he had a kind of crush on her- to kill him, because that was 'cruel and unusual punishment' and it would hurt more than anything he'd ever felt -he was sure of that- but it was an accident.
And sorry doesn't cover it. And it's just seeping into his head that if he didn't want to kill anyone, he shouldn't have picked up the gun.
And then the bus stops. Just suddenly stops. And he knows why. It's fate, kizmet, whatever you want to call it, that Willow would catch up to him.
And suddenly, Warren really wants to apologise. But he can't.
Sorry won't bring the girl back. He just hopes that it won't hurt as much as he's predicting.
