Title: At the Beginning of the Road
Fandom: Martian Successor Nadesico
Rating: PG
Warnings: Spoilers for episode 4 only -and only mild ones at that. I wouldn't worry about it. :D
Summary: Ryoko Subaru seems to have found the one place where she isn't the craziest person around. Then again, with Izumi and Hikaru around, she feels like that all the time.

Ryoko Subaru -they had nicknamed her the ‘Reckless Savage’ at the pilot school because of her initials and general attitude to life- had actually wanted to be a pilot, unlike seemingly every other Aestivalis pilot on the Nadesico.

“I TOLD YOU! I ONLY WANT TO BE A COOK, GODDAMMIT!”

In particular, one certain anime-obsessed Aestivalis pilot who just wouldn’t shut up.

And for once in her life, she wasn’t talking about Hikaru Amano.

“He’s an idiot.”

The holoscreen appeared just behind her and she jumped maybe a foot in the air, using most of the curses that she had learned at the school, before realising that the person on the other end of the screen was a kid.

Nice going, Ryoko.

“Ms Subaru, my name is Ruri Hoshino; I’m the Chief Science Officer of the Nadesico. I was wondering...how did the three of you get out of the Satsuki Midori colony? I understand that Ms Maki was in the toolbox that you used to tow the three Aestivalis models to the Nadesico, but Ms Amano had already boarded by then...”

“It’s Ryoko, Ruri. And we sent Hikaru on ahead to see if, after challenging the UEAF, you still needed us as extra pilots. I was doing a last-minute check on my Aesti and then everything exploded. I...couldn’t see Izumi. Didn’t actually think she’d survived the blast, so I hooked the three Aesti’s I could find up to mine and got the hell out of there. Guess it all worked out better than I expected.”

She couldn’t help herself. She’d never been able to keep her mouth shut and it had always managed to get her in trouble.

“So, what’s with that guy? He’s one of the original pilots, right?”

He’s kind of cute too, in an anxious sort of way...

“Mr Tenkawa’s problems are his own business, Ms Subaru. If his nervous breakdowns are too loud for you, then I suggest that you ask him to be a little quieter.”

With that, the holoscreen disappeared and Ryoko sighed. If the ditzy captain, the neurotic pilot and the emotionless girl were the standard of what she should expect from the Nadesico’s crew, she wouldn’t be entirely surprised if she was the most normal person on the ship.

She already knew that she would be the only pilot taking this fight seriously.

Between her new very noisy and reluctant team-mate; Hikaru, who was probably writing up notes to use for when she decided to make this into her new manga series and Izumi, who saw everything as a particularly dangerous game; she just knew that this would be the biggest challenge that she’d ever had to face.

Although, that being said, Ryoko Subaru had always loved a challenge...

Title: Unexpected Twists
Fandom: Crossover, Battle Royale (manga)/Death Note (manga)
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Spoilers for the Near/Mello arc. AU in both places.
Summary: Shinji Mimura isn't a violent criminal. Unfortunately, he has a hunch that Kira won't discriminate.

He’s not a criminal.

That isn’t entirely true, but he’s not a violent criminal. Technically Kira should never target him, but...one of the Kira’s -he thinks it was the ‘Yotsuba’ Kira, because the timing was about right and the person had clearly not done their research to see if he was actually innocent first- had already killed Shuuya. One minute he was alive and the next...

He hadn’t even been guilty. He’d been framed for assaulting a government official, but because they had just put him on the internet without even telling him about it, he had died. Not even in the 'disappeared and never seen again' way. He'd just suddenly collapsed in the middle of the classroom, clutching his chest. Noriko, sat next to him, had started screaming and had to be led gently out of the room by a shocked Yoshitoki.

And, in that moment, Shinji had known that he had to take Kira down, no matter who it was and what it took for him to do it.

So he hunted Near down -because he doesn't trust L and he certainly doesn't trust the police- and practically forced him to take Shinji on as an assistant.

He goes by 'S' now -because one letter names are in, don't you know?- and not even Yutaka knows about it. He feels a bit guilty about not telling his best friend, but...if Yutaka knew then it could cause trouble. For both of them. After all, this wasn't one of his usual games.

This was real life.

And Shinji wasn't going to get a replay if he screwed this one up.
