FANFEST '09!!!!

Oct 02, 2009 21:50

This is a post I just wrote up on the corporation forums for the corp i'm a member of in EVE, the 49th Fighter Group.

If you don't play EVE this may be pretty boring and/or won't make any sense, so my apologies in advance.  And to those who do play EVE, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.  I TOTALLY WISH I WAS IN ICELAND RIGHT NOW, DAMMIT.

Without further ado...
Greetings fellow corpmates!
As you all may or may not know, i've been following this year's announcements from fanfest very closely and i'm quite excited about what i've heard so far, and its only just the beginning!

Even better, thanks to the social networking wonder known as Twitter, these updates i've been getting are literally up to the minute.

Anyways, i'm at work at the moment (lol) but expect some hot news on this page later tonight once i get (if not on one of my breaks and/or lunch).

W1lliam Turner, signing off for now!

EDIT!!!!
Here are some great resources I've been using to follow events at fanfest!

www.twitter.com/shm5
www.twitter.com/borishotch
www.twitter.com/erfanfest

These are all twitter accounts of people at fanfest, and as far as I know you don't need to have a twitter account to read the updates.  There are far more but these seem the most informative.  That last one is actually EVE Radio.

www.dust514.org

a fansite that is going to have all the info on dust514 as soon as it's released. so far nothing has been mentioned about it, as of 2110 EDT on 10/2.  When BorisHotch (from twitter) mentioned this, CCP_Fallout replied with "sooooooooon".  So we shall see in due time, I guess.

images of an extremely exciting (imo, at least) and informative presentation (called oveur, i think?) earlier today (10/2) that details things like COSMOS, new stuff in dominion, the new eve mail system, and ambulation.

For those too lazy to follow all these links and read everything, I'm gonna go ahead and give a few brief news items here (it's basically just the stuff that sticks out in my mind the most).

--Walking in Stations (aka Ambulation) has the official name of "Incarna" now.  Trailer was a little underwhelming since it doesn't seem to show any new in-engine footage and it also gives no new info really, but it's kinda fun to watch anyways since it's got a cool concept behind it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KQtCg6fSEI

--In Dominion, planets are getting a huge aesthetic redesign and many will (eventually?) feature things like moving clouds, flowing lava, and even city lights on the dark sides.

--As you all know, sovereignty is getting a major overhaul from the ground up but I know basically nothing about it so I don't know how to explain the details and whatnot...suffice to say it's meant to allow alliances to improve the value of their space, get rid of so-called "AFK Empires", and make things less "grindy" and more strategic.

--Fighter bombers, a new class of ship, are being introduced as a way to balance out titans.

--On a related note, doomsday weapons are being revamped to a single-target uber-shot instead of an "I win" area of effect sort of thing.  Calon, I know we've had a discussion about this before, and I don't necessarily disagree with your opinion, but I also know nothing about lowsec or fleet combat or any of that.  Just repeating what I've read/heard, much of it from CCP.

--COSMOS has been renamed to "New Eden" (seems like a lame thing to do to me, but it's all good) because it's meant to be like EVE-away-from-EVE, and it's a web-based social networking app that's even going to be available on cellphones.  Eventually it will also feature file-hosting including for video and pictures, and a contacts list with "groups" or "labels" similar to gmail (the way you label messages and whatnot).  Different groups will have different privileges and these can be used as an aspect of corp management, etc., etc.

--Revamped EVE Mail system which will of course interface with COSMOS aka New Eden.  Also features gmail-esque labels and an intriguing Contacts system that will allow you to track literally every player you ever interact with on any level, whether it's combat, trading, or chatting, or whatever.

--This is by no means set in stone, but it's something being looked at...CSM is discussing moving ALL level 4 missions out of hi-sec and into lo-sec.  The reason for this (and this part is extrapolation on my part based on context clues and some slides in that flickr photostream above) seems to be that too many people are afraid to go into wormhole space for sweet loot, and so they resort to hi-sec level 4 missions instead.  Not sure how much sense that reasoning makes, but there it is.  Personally I think this is a potentially horrendous decision, and is one of the very few things to displease me so far.

--ANOTHER EDIT! Just remembered...CCP is going to start hosting their own killboards, and also corp and alliance forums.  They'll also be producing a proprietary voice chat client which will even be accessible outside the game, and one day even from mobile phones.  DAYUMN.

--Furthermore, they're going to be interfacing killmails such that they automatically post to one's New Eden account and update the killboard when necessary.

EDIT NUMBER 3
--Pirate faction epic mission arcs are being added that will allow players to explore the pirate cultures as well as get what the presentation describes as "phat l00t".

Ok, dudes.  I think that's all for now.  Expect more at some point tomorrow and/or Sunday.  Tomorrow at the very least we'll have more info on dust 514, and i'm sure plenty of other stuff.  Fly safe guys
