I'm lucky - I had enough disposable income on hand to get what supplies I didn't already have (and my momma taught me to keep the basics on hand for emergencies - didn't have to buy fuel or candles, and very little in the way of non-perishables). When I bought my house, it had a new addition on it that's got modern insulation, so it's always warmer/cooler than the rest of the house - and it's my master suite, so I've got a water supply in there, plus windows for light, and lots of blankets. It's large enough that the cats can hole up in there with me, small enough that if I close off the closets a few candles will help keep things warm in there. Along with providing water, the attached bath means I can stick the litterboxes in there and not have to have it right under my nose. If I need to cook something, I have a little grill, and I can set up under my attached carport, which is very sheltered but open enough that I don't have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning - and it might even warm up that area enough that I won't be freezing my tits off, LOL.

A lot of houses around here are old and barely even have insulation, and they depend on space heaters - it's not uncommon for people to close off rooms in their house for the whole winter, here, to try to keep the heating bills from being too outrageous. My bills don't make me happy, but they're not that bad even in the worst weather - insulation is my friend! So I have a plan if I have to deal with a power loss, and a backup plan of "walk across my back yard and hole up at the hospital" if things get too cold.
