Naruto AU: Flight001

Oct 01, 2005 20:54

I wrote and posted this on the 31_days community but wanted to share it here too. Besides, the one I posted on the community was written and then posted without any revision. Below is the second and final draft.

October for the community is AU (alternate universe) month, so every entry is characters you know and love in different settings/circumstances. The world I've rebuilt for Naruto is one built on aviation rather than ninjutsu. So this month, our ninja will be taking to the skies in the small series of drabbles I'll be writing and compiling. Here's the first.

Title: First Flight
Day/Theme: Oct 1st / A screaming comes across the sky
Series: Naruto
Characters: Naruto, Iruka, Sakura, Sasuke, Kiba, Shikamaru, Ino, Chouji.
Rating: G

First Flight

The small, yellow plane taxied itself out onto the runway, its propeller and hydraulics whirling with a cluttering of effort, the engine letting off the occasional sputter. A little too late, Iruka asked, “Are you sure this is safe?”

“No,” Sasuke answered. “That’s why Naruto’s testing it.”

“What?!”

“It’s fine, Iruka,” Ino assured their caretaker. “Shikamaru put this thing together himself. With Chouji and yours truly there to help!” Chouji grinned somewhere beside her.

“Again,” said another boy who was sharing the same mischievous sneer as the Uchiha, “this is why Naruto’s testing it.”

“No one asked you, Kiba!”

Sakura pressed the radio piece into her ear to close out the noise. “Flaps 15, Naruto. This runway’s shorter than the others.”

“Flaps 15, roger!” came the static reply from the pilot.

“How’s air direction, Sasuke?”

“No crosswinds. Looks like you picked a good day.”

Cheeks pink, Sakura continued on with the pre-flight checks, making sure all safety measures were taken and known, double-checking weight, runway length, and decided speeds, altitudes, and flight patterns with the air traffic reports Kiba had scanned for them. Naruto’s complaints soon began drowning out the sounds of the machine.

“LET’S GET GOING ALREADY!” he bellowed. “I WANNA FLY!”

“Idiot,” Shikamaru grumbled. “He’s gonna die if he rushes it.”

“What?!”

“I-it’s fine, Iruka. Really!”

The few minutes that passed seemed to stretch on into an eternity for those anxious to see how sweet the fruits of their past six months of labor were. Finally Sakura cleared the take-off.
There was an overjoyed whoop from the cockpit and a few scattered cheers from the make-shift “tower” as the engine was gunned for a smooth rolling accent. They began shouting the moment the wheels lifted from the earth.

“I think he’s… He’s up!”

“It works! It really works!”

“Of course it does! We made it!”

“Yeah, hence the shock.”

“We did it!”

“Icarus Prelims, here we come!”

The ground crew had burst alive into cheers and congratulations, but in the midst of them Iruka remained still, watching the mechanical yellow bird roar overhead them. Of all the excited, scared, happy thoughts that ran through his mind, there was one that stood out the most.

He’s going to be just like his father.

Above them, Uzumaki Naruto soared screaming across the sky.

Authoress Notes

In this AU, the eye of the world is upon the skies as aircrafts provide the most popular means of delivery, transportation, recreation, and military power. While aircraft and weapons don't seem to surpass any technology much farther beyond WWI, radios, telephones, refrigeration, and even early signs of television still exist.

This is an AU I dreamed up over a year ago, but only recently started putting serious thought into. And then, coincidentally, 31_days has AU Month... So I'll be taking advantage of this while I can.

I hope some of you liked this, and might even stick around to reading future drabbles as I establish this world and the different lives the characters have lived.

Also, if anyone out there is a real aviation specialist and notices me totally misusing terms, feel free to point them out. But please be kind, since I'm also still teaching myself. ^^; Thank you.
