The past two mornings have been absolutely splendid for me. I am up around seven and at the River & Trail rafthouse by seven forty-five. Tired, the river guides and trainees, me included, begin counting out and piling up the appropriate number of deflated rafts required of us for the number of guests we are taking out on the water. This pile is then loaded up on a trailer of some nature and we take it to some of the more flattened banks of the river. There is a rush, then, to properly fill up the rafts with air and get them out onto the water while assigning a guide to each. The guides then begin tying down their items in it. The tour groups arrive by bus and pile into the boats with whatever river guide seems to suit their fancy. So far I have not been given a boat to guide of my own, I am currently riding in the trainee boat, accompanied by someone who is pretty familiar with the rapids we are riding on.
Today I was priveledged enough to guide our training boat onto a rock.
My only hope is that, with time, I will get better at it.
All in all, however, I am pleased with this new line of work. I am outdoors, hot or cold, and on the water, flat or rough. I come home shortly after two in the afternoon, tired, and waste some unecessary time on my computer before I begin to make myself a cup of coffee. This summer is going to be good, I can feel it.
