The mechanics of the Holy Grail War would take far too long to explain. I'll just say that I needed a constant source of energy to feed on in order to maintain my existence in reality. These orphans that Kirei provided were as good as any other.

They were the damaged survivors of that fire. [He nudges his head, referring to his last dream/memory.] It is unlikely that they would have been adopted, so that priest took them in and gave them a different function. That's all there is to it.
