Serious Question.....

Our DVD player crapped the bed last week. We own a lot of DVDs and are hoping to start working our way through all of them. We are setting aside those we aren't really interested in owning. Movies that were gifted or bought in $5 bins at Wal*Mart. Anything we get for them goes to the next gen fund ( Read more... )

Alright, I'll throw in a little more detailed than I did on your facebook. I'm the kind of sucker that needs all the pretty toys, so I have a 360, PS3 and hiding somewhere is a useless Wii. I'm running both on a Sony Bravia XBR 52'' 1080p. 240Hz LCD tv. Because in this discussion the TV is very relevant. If your running on a TV that can't support HD there isn't a question. I also use my TV as a monitor for my PC.
Games are easy: Xbox 360, better exclusives, longer time to have better titles out. And comparing games that have come out on both they look/play better. And Xbox's commitment to downloadable content for all games is way beyond any other system.

Netflix: I've used Netflix streaming to the TV through the computer before the Xbox supported it. The Xbox definitely looks crisp and better than standard PC streaming. They did a good job. Especially on putting out as close to HD quality as possible. I very rarely have a problem with any lagging. The HD quality on Netflix is pretty close (little less) to watching an up converted standard def dvd on the PS3. I just watch Serenity on netflix and finished it in the ps3 to make this comparison. Netflix has blown up there library since it's gone on the 360. You still don't have the latest and greatest, but there's a good selection. The display on the 360 is cool too. Only showing you the movie covers allowing you to scroll through them. The problem there is if you (like I) have a 300+ Q, sometimes scrolling to get that bottom listed movie can suck. Also Netflix has recently partnered up with the 'Stars' channel. Anything that Stars offers onDemand will also be available to stream through netflix as long as Stars offers them. Which really gives netflix some of there best streaming titles monthly. The TV shows are good and some are pretty current. Yes you need a Gold subscription for this, but there $50 a year and can be purchased for less (I can get them for around 35-40).

Blu-ray: Yes it looks veerrry pretty. I can tell a difference. Is it worth the money? If your the kid who needs the coolest toy like me, then yes. If you can settle with just enjoying the movie, then probably not right now. As for the quality of the Ps3 vs other blu-rays, go with the Ps3. It runs a better system than any bluray near it's cost, free updates. The only thing your going to lose out on is the PS3 currently does Not support 7.1 audio output. So if you want/have a serious home theater this may be a drawback. Even with that flaw I think the firmware updates and 2.0 are worth it. But the economy sucks and bluray sales really aren't that good even when they look good. Walmart has some titles for around $10 but I bet there wont be many in there you really want, but there's a few good ones. I only own a few Br movies. Mostly movies I figured would look good, wall-e for the kid, Hellboy2 and they look amazing sound great. Blade Runner looks amazing on bluray, if that's your thing.

The counter to bluray being expensive is if you have netflix you can get bluray movies through them too. So I double up. Stream the xbox, bluray the disks. But if you have to choose 1, I'd still go with the Xbox due to it being overall the better entertainment system, where the ps3 is a great movie player. And friends on the xbox are Way better. Harassing them for playing crappy games and sending them messages to mess them up during guitar hero.

A note on Digital Downloads and Downloadable content on the Xbox! If you download movies to Buy and save on your Xbox (they have an itunes rent/buy system) or anything you download Xbox has a major flaw they don't talk about. All of your downloaded content is saved to your Xbox's ID tag. If you Any reason your Xbox breaks and needs to be replaces, even if Microsoft does it, you will lose all that information and need to redownload it. After that the movies/content will Only be available while you are currently connected to the internet. When you redownload them they encrypt onto your HD that it's not the same System ID and only being online accessing the Live system can it verify you are you and allow you to access your stuff. This happened to me when my xbox broke I lose all my GH2 and oblivion downloads and still today (played oblivion) this hasn't been fixed. And yes, Xbox's break, everything breaks. So that's a big caution when you start getting digistuff on the Xbox.
Whatever you get I'd suggest getting it at Best Buy and grabbing there service plan. It's well worth the money.
