Today I got up before dawn and went for a trail run. Then basically spent the day driving - six hours plus a lunch break.
We are now in Kaikoura. I'm kind of sick of my mother. Not that she's a horrible person...
She has had a camera stuck to her face since we got off the plane. I asked her if she wanted to be in the moment for a while and put it away - even in the car. We round the corner and if there's anything at all interesting it goes straight to her face. I asked her if she would still travel if she could not take pictures. She said no. She doesn't enjoy it. What.
Anyway, that's my mom. I kind of expected to have a lot of deep talks with her, but by the third day of vacation everything had been said. Meals are quiet. By the fourth or fifth day, I had to ask her to wait for me to eat breakfast - she was heading out without me. She blames this on my father - he hasn't eaten breakfast with her in 46 years.
My dad is very quiet and very compliant. They've been together since before she was 21. I sort of suspect now that my mom is used to being in charge and she's having a hard time sharing "being in charge" on this trip. She's used to doing what she wants.
Anyway, it's not horrible. It's food for thought. Glad we went together though. Now I'm beginning to think about the rest of my life.
Oh, tonight - I had Taua. Which is like abalone. Interesting.
Saw a bunch of seals too.
