Anyways, here we go - something a bit different.
Warp Speed is the first novel by Dr. Travis S. Taylor. In the rather near future, the idea of creating a warp drive is possible, but until a redneck scientist's team in Alabama discovers a way to power them, it's simply not feasible. Soon, however, starting in space and continuing on Earth the scientist and his friends and family find themselves caught up in World War 3 as other countries attempt to monopolize the warp drive.
Like many Baen books, there's a definite political bent to the book, one to the right, but it's not as overwhelming as some other books. For the most part, it's a pretty fast paced story ranging from technothriller to sci-fi. It's not deep and philosophical but it is fun in an old school kind of way.
One thing the book does avoid is the idea of what the technologies they come up with would affect society. Deciding that the warp drive and power generation would be destabilizing to society as a whole, and very dangerous as WMDs, so they hide them under layers of secrecy and bureaucracy.
It's a quick, fun read.
