Runo Knows...The Horus Heresy: Descent of Angels

This is kind of an unfinished one, it feels like to me.  It's obviously intended to be the start of another series, or sub-series, or whatever you want to call it.

Basically, there's two halves of the book.  The first half of the book is all about life on Caliban, the home planet of the Dark Angels.  Of course, they're not aware of the Imperium yet, and so Lion El'Johnson and his men are in The Order, one of the knightly orders that fights the monsters in the forests that prey on humans.  The story follows a young initiate as he makes his way through the ranks of the Order.

Shortly after the Order succeeds in ridding Caliban of all the monsters the Emperor arrives.  From there, it's a question of Caliban becoming integrated into the Imperium and the stresses that brings on society there - and how the knights end up joining the Dark Angels.  There are repercussions coming from that, but like the Heresy in general, for now they're just building up.

Thus, the book turns into one of those "setting the stage" books.  I wasn't bowled over by it, and honestly, kind of just shrugged at it.  I'll keep reading the series, 'cause, you know, I'm one of those kind of guys, but it's far from the strongest or best book even in the Horus Heresy line, much less the overall 40K series of books.
