I've come up with a sample Space Marine army - 1500 points. Thoughts are always welcome, and I'll point out some changes I've made due to input from my guild.
HQ Unit 1: Master of Sanctity (chaplain) w/ bolt pistol, 9x Space Marines, 1x Apothecary
HQ Unit 2: Codicier (librarian) w/ Terminator armor, storm bolter, 4x Terminator Command Squad
- Transport for Terminators: 1 x Land Raider w/ Extra Armor, Dozer Blade, Pintle-Mounted Storm Bolter, Hunter-Killer Missile
Elite Unit 1: Dreadnought w/ Extra Armor
Troop Unit 1: Veteran Space Marine Sergeant, 9 x Space Marines w/ 1 Flamer, 1 Lascannon, and 10x Frag Grenades
Troop Unit 2: 10 x Space Marines w/ 1 Flamer, 1 Heavy Bolter, 10x Krak Grenades
Troop Unit 3: 9 x Scout Marines w/ 9 x sniper rifles
Originally, I had both squads with heavy bolter/flamer combos, and instead of krak grenades the 4 terminators had chain fists. However, in the idea of more anti-tank capability, I changed it to what I had.
There's 285 points invested in that Land Raider; discussion with one guildie, who showed off the incredible anti-tank capabilities of some of his armies, especially the Necrons, led me to think that perhaps I'd swap it out for additional troop capabilities, perhaps assault marines and/or attack bikes, or a different psychic power for the librarian (or even upgrading him to a better librarian and getting additional powers).
The army itself would be a custom one. I haven't picked out any drawbacks/traits yet (if I do at all) for the chapter, though I was thinking of "See, but don't be seen" and either "Cleanse and Purify" (somber) or "Trust your Battle-brother" (courageous) with "Eye to eye" as the major drawback, or just one of those with "Die Standing" or "Death before dishonour".
Having checked the prices on the minis - damn. I didn't realize just how expensive of a hobby I was getting into. For the minis alone - mind you I don't own any paints or anything like that - the Terminator command squad alone would cost $50, not assuming any additional "bits", the Land Raider is $55, and the Dread $40 at my local store. Owie.
I may also go ahead and design armies for the various other factions, plus additional Space Marine ones (conforming, perhaps, to the traits listed above) to see what I'd want to play.
Then, of course, I'd need to actually play the goddamned game. And that's always the crux of the matter, isn't? The local game store does play after 1 PM on Saturdays...
Anyone else around here play this stupid expensive game? (grins)
