Thank you for restoring pride in this program. But most of all, thank you for recognizing what is good for the program and when it is time to hand the reins over to someone who will bring us out of mediocrity, and maybe, just maybe, turn us into a national powerhouse.
Iowa State... a national powerhouse? This editorial should keep me laughing for the next year. I'd like to thank the Cyclone Nation for handing the CyHawk Trophy back to the University of Iowa for the next how many years. I'd like to thank the Cyclone Nation for making it easier for the Hawkeyes to recruit the best in-state talent available while Iowa State takes the scraps. I'd like to thank the Cyclone Nation for making the biggest mistake they have made in a long time.
Now, that I've gotten the sarcasm out of the way... let's talk business. OKay, so Coach Mac has a losing record at Iowa State. Let's look at some of the records of the coaches before him. Let's restrict it to 30 years, okay? Most of the coachs have better winning percentages than Coach Mac; but, he's got more years than any of them. The three coachs prior to him never delivered a bowl game either. In 10 years, Coach Mac gives them 5 bowl games. 15 years (and 3 coaches) before the era of Coach Mac, zero bowl games. Should we discuss that Coach Mac is one of the only coaches in Iowa State history that can actually boast NOT to have a losing record against Iowa?
I realize this year was a disappointment. 10 returning starters on offense and the offense never seems to get off the ground. The defense had injuries at key positions (especially in the secondary) before the season even began. Then you consider the number of teams that were ranked when they played Iowa State and you can see why the season hasn't turned out the way people wanted it to. Iowa State has the second lowest budget for football in the Big Twelve. It doesn't have the recent history of Nebraska, Texas, etc to bring in recruits. I'm sorry, but the Cyclone Nation was asking for the near impossible for what they have to work with.
But the truth is... Coach Mac took Iowa State from a college football joke to more than mediocrity. He worked hard to make Iowa State respectable as a football program. That's a little more than mediocrity. And anyone who thinks that Iowa State is going to become a national powerhouse because of a coaching change is out of their minds. Coach Mac took the Cyclone Nation to places they hadn't been since 1979. He made the program more than a smudge on people's schedules. Coach Mac made Cyclone football...
Congratulations on ruining it...
Edit: Oh... I almost forgot. Coach Mac is the guy that got them within one game of the Big 12 championship... 2 years in a row. Yep... he sucks.
