Just to catch people up on what I do now...
About 3 months ago, I moved from being a General Laborer in the mailroom (read: insert ads) of a newspaper into the Plate and Camera department. Well, since we don't work with cameras anymore, its not called Pre-press. Okay, so what's my job?
I sit at a computer and check PDFs to make sure everything is correct on them in terms of color and layout. Yes, you'd be surprised at the stuff I run into. Having a picture saved as an RGB picutre instead of CMYK makes a huge difference. No, I'm not gonna explain the difference... let's just say its the difference between light and ink. :)
Once, I do that I print it out on a negative. I check and make sure the negative looks right. Make sure it imaged correctly and all that jazz... Make sure no black sept out onto all 3 color pages... this happens a lot with some of our jobs as they don't save their files correctly. WHEEE....
Then I take the negatives and burn them onto a plate. I do this until I have the job completely done. Do a small amount of paperwork and then... BOOM, walk the plates to the press. Pick up another job jacket and start another job. Its not too bad of work and I can goof off at a computer while I wait for negatives... like I am now. Actually, I'm doing a job that doesn't need to be done for another 3 hours because I can't do the next two jobs quiet yet. Still waiting on the PDFs to arrive. I'll start working on those in about an hour.
The pay isn't great and I honestly think I should be paid more, but its easy work. The other thing is I'm learning some 'skilled' labor positions. We are getting brand new equipment so I'm learning to use 'state of the art' printing gear. Any bets I can find a good job anywhere I go? Yeah, I think so. Helps the company I work for is owned by a larger corp so I can always look for a 'transfer' if I want out of this town.
So, yeah. That's what I do for a living now. My wife does more of the bread winning since she got her fulltime job as a police dispatch... but I do more around the house than I used to. And I am so proud of her... and of us.
Catch you all later, I need to get back to work. hehe
