I can't sleep and I've bitched about the negative stuff. So let's talk about the good times I had at 24 hours of gaming at the local comic book store.
I got to play more variety of games this time as I set a limit to how long I'd sit at one game. Granted, one or two went over the limit but they were worth it. I played Dual of Ages, Apples to Apples, Flux, and then got two decent RPG adventures in. One I ran, the other I played.
The one I played in was great. Survivor: D&D 3.0 (not 3.5) was the 'name' of the one shot. It was hilirious. Basically, Survivor done with fantasy characters. I used the premade Half-Orc Barbarian that the GM provided... and had so much fun being as barbaric as possible. Highlights of game:
1) Traveling in a maze. One group had the map above ground, the other half trying to find the two magic items in the maze. The stakes: what we brought back we kept. If no items were recovered, the half of the tribe above ground got immunity. If items were recovered, the first person out with a magic item got immunity. Ironically, the above ground group did NOT screw the below ground group where I was.
So what was the highlight? My char falls into a trap. Knowing we will have to comeback this same way we need to mark it. The bard suggests we use one of the short spears I fashioned out of branches and coral. How did I mark it? Pull the lion cloth over to the side and mark it doggie style. Needless to say, it got some groans... but a lot of people that it was the barbaric thing to do and applauded it. I was pleased with myself.
2) In the same maze, we ran into a minotaur. Our arms? one short sword the bard had, the monk, and my jury-rigged spears. Minotaur hits me with a grand axe. My attack in kind? Grab the axe. I hit the melee attack and then won the contest of skills... and then axed the minotaur. I was quite pleased with this. Why? Because I got a big ass weapon and got away with something REALLY stupid, but still stayed IC.
3) Final challenge: get the eye of the dragon. Naturally it was a stone. Well, our monk ran off to go get it because whoever got it, got to pick the other person who would thus make the final two. When we got there, the monk was gone and ICly we assumed he'd biten the big one. Or rather gotten bit by the big one.
We nicely asked for the stone. The dragon said he couldn't give it to us and said that he didn't have time to talk to a barbarian. So what did I do? I gave him the Braveheart treatment. What did I get in return? I got a spanking with a dragon tail. Laughs abounded at this...
4) Because we had no weapons, we more or less got our asses kicked by this dragon. We attempted to run away before it killed us. The one person to make it out was the freakin magic user. Number of hit points left: 1
Oh, it gets worse. The fighter who decided not to go in because he didn't want to die was waiting for us at the bottom. Figuring he wins this if he's the only one to live... he STABS the magic-user with a makeshift spear!!! How very Survivor and how VERY ironic. Mage survives the dragon only to be killed by a tribe member.
The monk had recovered the Eye of the Dragon by asking for it. Ironically it was an Emerald Dragon (Lawful Neutral). Our monk, same alignment. They had struck a deal. Monk borrows the gem and returns it. So, the monk and the fighter were the final two. Any guesses on who won? Naturally, the monk. And for the record, I did manage to come up with a good IC reason to lose the loincloth and walk around the final challenge in a barbarian's natural glory. Just the character, not me.
I ran a one shot adventure using Cartoon Action Hour in the Darkness Unleashed series book. Cartoon Action Hour is supposed to be an RPG that captures the feel of 80s cartoons. And it does it so very well. The premade adventure ran about an hour and 30 minutes. Short, but it had the campy cheesy feel of the 80s cartoons. It was good for laughs and an entertaining time. I picked up the Metal Wars series book with GTR (Giant Transforming Robots) and it looks good.
It was a good night... exhausting, but good. I can't wait for the next.
