So everyone knows how much I love animals and how I have been begging Brian to let me get some pet; a dog, cat, rabbit, anything!! Well he finally relented and said I could get an outdoor kitty in three weeks, when we get everything moved out of the garage. Our idea is that the cat could at least come in the garage at night, and Brian doesn't want cat all over our stuff because he is so allergic. Then the other day he decided if I wanted, we could get a kitten instead of an adult cat. I was really excited and teased him that I was going to start looking on the Humane Society website to pick out "our baby". He looked at me sternly and said "three weeks, woman!!"
Anyways, two days ago we had both just gotten home from work and were doing random things in the house. Something outside the window caught my eye across the street, so I went over to look. There was a black adult cat wandering around, nuzzling these two girls selling magazine subscriptions. I jokingly told Brian I was going to kidnap the kitty and give him a home. He just shook his head at me as I went outside and called "here kitty kitty kitty" just to see if the cat was domesticated enough to come over. Well sure enough he came trotting across the street, and started nuzzling me. Brian came out after awhile and was surprised the cat was hanging out with me. He started petting him, and the kitty looked at him warily. Then we tried to feed him, but he wasn't hungry. He REALLY wanted in the house though. We left him on the back porch, with my sweatshirt to curl up on if he felt like it. But after awhile he disappeared. From the looks of him he either belongs to someone, or used to cuz he is a neutered male cat, and he is well fed. He does have a little bit of feral characteristics, so I am not sure about him being owned. We asked the neighbors and no one knows who he belongs to. So that night we went to bed and I was teasing Brian that we had found our kitty. He told me there was probably a little girl crying her eyes out somewhere right now. ;)
Fast forward to yesterday. We are hanging outside again after work, unpacking and such and the black kitty is chilling with us. By this time I have happily delusioned myself into thinking that he is my cat, and even if he isn't I am going to keep him fed and care for him as long as he keeps hanging around. (We are starting to think that he may just be a stray that has been being fed by people in the neighborhood and so just kinda hangs out around the houses on our street.) Anyways, I am hanging out sitting on the front porch and Brian is in the yard. The black cat is on the porch with me, cautiously letting me pet him, and purring while nuzzling me. Brian looks up at me and smiling, shakes his head. Then he offhandedly says "You know if that cat has in fact claimed us, this means you have your cat and no kitten, right?" I looked at him, and made a sad pouty face, and then said "What do you mean no kitten?! Our little boy here needs a playmate." As Brian is bending back down to pull some more weeds, and sighing at me all the while, a calico kitten comes trotting around the side of the house and comes to a screeching halt when it sees Brian. I swear to you guys this kitten came from the side of our house, at the EXACT moment Brian was telling me we couldn't get a kitten! Is that weird timing or what?!
When the kitten comes flying around the house, my mouth falls open and I quietly, but insistently whisper loudly to Brian to look up. Bri looks at me first and sees the shock on my face, then he looks straight ahead and just stares, dumbfounded. I then exclaim "Cats are falling from the sky around here. I think they may be falling from heaven. This means God wants you to let me have a kitten too!" We are both in shock and amazement that this kitten has just seemingly shown up at our house. Kinda spooky if you ask me. Brian right away trys to gently reach out and pet said kitten, and she lets him a little bit but then playfully darts away to chase a bug. Meanwhile my black kitty starts growling, and I see where this is going so I gently but firmly hold him near me and tell him "no." Now I know from experience that cats actually can't be given direction like dogs. You never really own a cat, I think that they own you more than anything. They are so independent that they come and go as they please, and do what they want pretty much. I know all this. I was just afraid that my cat would hurt this adorable little kitten, and I didn't want to see it happen. So I told Brian to try and catch the kitten, and he made an attempt but she darted across the street and out of sight. My black kitty couldn't see her anymore, so he calmed down. I went around to see where she was and found her frolicking in the bushes. After a little bit she came to me and started purring and playing.
K, to make the rest of this long story short, in the span of one week after moving into our house, two cats have claimed us as theirs' it seems. I have named them both. Merlin, is the black one because its halloween time and I was thinking of black cats, and wizards and such and Merlin just came to mind. And the calico I named Missy. Merlin is very wary of Missy and hangs out around our house, but won't go on the porches. He still comes up to be pet but I think he is miffed that this kitten has invaded "his territory." Missy is definitely feral. She has those wild insticts that domestic kittens don't. Up until late last night whenever I picked her up, she would not relax in my arms. Its like she didn't know what it was to be held. Last night before bed I tried picking her up again, and like magic she all of a sudden started to relax into my petting her, and started purring and nuzzling me. We made her a makeshift bed out of a tote and my old sweatshirt, and she curled up in that and started purring and kneading the sweatshirt like crazy. Then she scampered off. This morning both cats were back, Missy at the back door, Merlin at the front of the house, near the garage. I am going to go today and get cat and kitten food, and find them better beds. They may both belong to someone else, or they may both be wild. But we have asked around about both of them and no one knows who they belong to. I am just going to take care of them as long as they stay around. This means vet visits too. It will be interesting to see how they ride in carriers, and that may have to wait awhile to see if they do in fact stick around, and if they get any tamer. We definitely need to take Missy in to see if she has been spayed, at the very least.
Anyways, that is my humorous story. I think the whole thing, how it all happened is hilarious. Here I am whining about getting a pet, and I end up with two of them! (At least for the time being.) I almost feel like it was divine intervention or something. I teasingly told Brian that God knew how much I wanted animals, so he gave me two of them to care for. Brian has made it clear that there is NO way I am getting a kitten from the humane society now! I told him he better not say those words cuz last time it didn't work out too well for him, and he better watch out, cuz next time it could be a dog showing up around the side of the house. ;)~
