#109: Ask the maker

Aug 26, 2013 00:11

I know the icons were recuested but my laptop was at repair and I couldn't do it earlier...

Lets start with the Klaus icon.

And we have the crop:

I must say that I learned to make icons from the base 100x100, even the drawing ones. Also I like to change mid layers, so I'll be saying which layer is which (or I'll try ^^). Also I'll post the picture of full layers print screen.

OK. So we have the base. It's too dark so we need to brighten it. Duplicate the base and set it to Screen and fill it with 100% (I'll write the shortened version, remember that I will change FILL, not OPACITY!).

It's still too dark, so duplicate the base and set it to Screen 56%, or duplicate screened layer and fill it with 55% ;)

Now the icon needs a bit more contrast, so set it to Soft Light 33%.

Now the icon needs colors! I added THIS TEXTURE (unfortunately IDK the maker ;_; ) and set it to Screen 96%.

And now we have a part with going back in layers. I like to go back and change settings/add textures so this might be distracting, but don't worry, I'll post print screen with all layers with right order ;)

I wanted to achieve the flowing paint body effect, but after few miserable tries, I just gave up and get the normal flowing paint effect ^^
So I opened google and searched for good flowing paint picture, and I found THIS IMAGE. I resized this, changes settings and got THIS. Just to be sure, this is my texture, you can take this but credit me if you us it :)
Add this layer right next to Klaus'es layers, set it to Screen 100%.

Then, I wanted to have wrapped effect, and I used THIS TEXTURE (IDK the maker too, sorry!). Standardly, set it to Screen 100%. I didn't like the placement to I moved it a bit.

Then I used the gradient fill (Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Gradient Fill). I got list of gradients and I chose b&w gradient, like HERE. Set it to Soft Light 75%.

I thought that the icon is too light, so I duplicated THIS TEXTURE, and set it to Soft Light 100%. The thing is, I erased the head and the pinted part of icon in layer mask, to make them lighter than the rest of the icon.

Actually I like the look now, but in the time I was making the icon, I was crazy abut borders, so I clicked Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E twice (this flattens the image into one layer and take it to the top of the layer list) and moved them into borders.
I moved the layers between wrapped textures and gradient ones (I didn't changed the settings). At the end I added some handwritten texture (if you want to know which exactly, please comment to this post).

And the final form is this:

Also, here you have all layers.

And now I'll work with Peggy Carter icon. I must say the screencap was really hard and I was fighting so much with this. I also lost the base of the icon and I had to recreate it but the result is almost the same.

So, here we have screencap:

And the crop:

From the beginning I knew I'll make solid background (reddish texture) and I tried to achive red coloring. I used Curves and add THESE SETTINGS

I added B&W gradient and set it to Soft Light 78%

to make more contrast I used Layers and get THESE SETTINGS

Then I saw that the icon is a bit too light, so I used Brightness/Contrast and give these settings:
Brightness: -9
Contrast: 5

Then I wanted to work with colors so I used Color Balance and give these settings:
Shadows: +6, 0, 0
Midtones: +17, +1, 0
Highlights: nothing changed

then I wanted to accent the lights and the top of the icon and used Curves again and give THESE SETTINGS

Then I realised there's too big contrast between top and bottom of the icon so I added B&W gradient again but with black in top and white in bottom and setted it to Soft Light 10%.

Aaaand now, we make Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E to flatten image and make fun with deleting background. I posted my way of deleting background tutorial HERE.

My result (and actual base, which I used in finished icon xd) is here:

Then, I open new 100x100 file and put THIS TEXTURE in bottom of the layers list.

The Peggy body was too light so I duplicated the layer and set it to Soft Light 100%.

Then I wanted to make more lightning/shadows and added THSIS TEXTURE and set it to 55%

The next step is to add another texture TWICE (LOOK HERE) and first layer of this texture set to Soft Light 25% and the next one set to Screen 100%.

Then I added next TEXTURE and set it to Soft Light 70%.

To make more lights in left side, I added ANOTHER TEXTURE and set it to Soft Light 55% and duplicated it, set it to Screen to 25%.

Actually this is the end, because I only added THIS TEXTURE, setted to Screen 100% and duplicated this texture, made Ctrl+I and add dark red to the texture ONLY and setted to Multiply (Fill is up to you)

And the final look is this:

HERE & HERE yuo can find the layer lists.

Aaaaand now, your beloved Renly icon haha xd I didn't expect that this icon would hav so huge positive feedback, really!

Here we have screencap:

And the crop:

As in Peggy icon, I will make the base and delete background.

Because the icon is dark, duplicate the base and set it to Screen 100%. And because it's still bit too dark, duplicate the base and set it to Screen 50%. To make more contrast, click Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E and set the layer to Soft Light 75%.

Adjust new Color Balance with these settings:
Shadows: 0, 0, -3
Midtones: +5, 0, -10
Highlights: +12, 0, -6

And now, click Ctrl+Shift+N to make new transparent layer and already set it to Soft Light. I want to make more coloured robe. First, I make the top side of Renly's robe:

Then I used 1px white brush to achive more lightning on the robe. Also I painted the upper side of the clothes.

Now you can flatten the image and delete background and sharpen it a little (I often use Smart Sharpen).

The result is not the same, but it's very similar:

From this moment, I'll be using the Renly's result from the past.

I wanted to make the characteristic thing to background and I searched for his home banner and got this:

I deleted the text, resized it and got this:

The next step is to add THIS TEXTURE and set it to Screen 75%.

(You can see some paints, probably I just made it without knowing it o.O)

Add B&W gradient texture (used before) and set it to Soft Light 50%.

Then I used Curves with THESE SETTINGS.

And now the base is ready so you can add Renly's body. Because I think the body is a tiny bit too dark (and to make more contrast), duplicate the Renly's body and set it to Soft Light 50%

This step is not necessary but I think it makes icon a little bit more interesting. You just add some grunge texture with white background and black spots and set it to Multiply 50%-100%.

Now duplicate the Curves layer used before here and set it to Normal 28%.

Duplicate B&W gradient texture and set it to Soft Light 50%.

To make icon more vibrant, use Selective Color and add these settings:
REDS:
C. -36%
M. 0%
Y. +45%
B. 0%

YELLOWS:
C. -19%
M. +15%
Y. +19%
B. +1%

Use THIS TEXTURE and set it to Soft Light 40% to make more contrast.

Add THIS TEXTURE and set to Screen 13% to make more little lightning.

And this is the end! This is not spectacular tutorial but I hope you'll make such gorgeous icons with this :)

Also, here you have layers:
1 & 2
