It all started with a conversation with
festivewind regarding the firsts of everything in our loooong fanarting careers. Amidst talks of mainstream Gundam Wing pairings, an idea to do some sort of "art progress" folio cropped up all of a sudden =D.
It all... started with a masochistic desire to humiliate ourselves in public. Which is why our posts aren't locked. It's part of the challenge XDDD.
Got your eyedropper?
1990 First up! is a relatively (LOL) early fanart of the classic shoujo manga Candy-Candy by Igarashi Yumiko. I liked it so much at the tender age of 4 that I even doodled on my sister's copies (which is why I've retained these drawings XD). The scenes that used to move me to tears then make me LMAO now thanks to my lipstick/mustache doodles on certain characters' faces (I must've really hated Terry back then). Next to Candy-Candy is... supposedly... Ranmaru from Yamato Waki's Haikarasan ga Tooru OTL. I butchered him real good, didn't I... This was the first manga title I picked up and read. Ever.
1991 Durrrr.... DORAEMON XDDD. I don't know any Asian manganime aficionado who hasn't read this uber popular classic by the Fujiko F. Fujio pair. Again, I found this drawing in the first volume of Doraemon. Next to it is the main character of Ramu-chan by Takahashi Rumiko... I think? Behind her lolling its tongue - my Indonesian friends would recognise it - is Pank Ponk by Tachiri Haruko! I loved that adorable crack manga ;____;
1995 This is such a huge time leap, I know, but I couldn't find the crappy attempts at manga-drawing that I did during the lost 4 years. I remember one day in Grade 3 or 4 looking at them, feeling GREATLY EMBARRASSED and dumping the entire lot in a rubbish bin. I regret it nooooow. ANYWAY I only drew girls because my ability to draw guys had been close to zero. Of course, liking BL much later in life helped, haha.
1996 Oh, man, Sailor Moon by Takeuchi Naoko was my first big fandom. I drew a lot for it (much like what I do now with KHR) and which are so embarrassing that I would never look at them again. AGAIN. I think I must've picked up my early face-drawing style from Takeuchi.
1997 I... have no idea what this is. Snow White, maybe. Anyway, as you can see, I didn't meet much improvement during these 3 years.
1998 Original characters. Boring? Yes, very.
2001 Another leap. The bulk of my highschool manga drawings aren't accessible to me right now (Australia!). Around this time, I've begun to interest myself in quaint fashion and historical garments (street was never my style). Around this time, also, I was influenced by Watase Yuu of Fushigi Yuugi fame who had completely wiped my style clean of Takeuchi.
2002 GUYS - YAY. I sort of stopped drawing girls after BL fangirlism kicked in by that time. Also, my third attempt at Copic markers. Never touched them markers again since. At this stage, my style had been influenced somewhat by Matsushita Youko of Yami no Matsuei. Matsushita's style was my ticket to drawing guys who didn't look like girls sans eyelashes with square shoulders XDDD.
2003 I stopped drawing typical shoujo style for a bit by the end of highschool to have a go at CLAMP's simplistic later style. Probably something like Angelic Layer.
2004 Back to shoujo style, except I wanted to tackle a style that was "my own". Not sure how much of it was mine, but I can be sure that some of it was stolen from Yuki Kaori, hee hee. It is around this time also that I started to invest in Bazaar and Vogue magazines.
2005 1st Half After I entered college, I COMPLETELY stopped all manganime-related activities. Everything. I no longer bought doujins, no longer read manga nor watched anime, and no longer listened to Japanese music. During this period, I became a classical music and western history snob OTL. I also ceased drawing for a while and, when I did draw, I made sure it didn't look manga-ish.
2005 2nd Half I fell in love with boys choirs and historical costumes. I was an English fashion history geek during this time, I even purchased vintage patterns and dressed my SD-13 boy in a sailor suit x__x.
2006 A feeble attempt at manga style after nearly 2 years. I wasn't sure what to draw and how to draw it and gave up a second time. Thanks to schoolwork, also, I adopted my own cartoon style that I call "Sunday paper comic" style. Towards the end of the year, I've started to slowly re-enter fandoms and immersed myself in the nostalgia listening to my old Jpop CDs XDDD. I loved LOVELESS and Code Geass around this time and had started to read manga again.
2007 1st Quarter This is after I graduated from college and began interning at an advertising agency. I doodled during spare moments and these are the kinds of stuff I drew. 2007 marks the beginning of my second life online, having accidentally joined forum discussions on Ghost Hunt where I met
yamikakyuu,
honeysempai and
lkk. LKK got me to sign up on LiveJournal (she had an essay draft that I wanted to see). And then...
2007 1st Quarter II ...my first fanart in years happened. Naru on a violin ROFL. The first one I uploaded online, too, courtesy of
sapphire-18 who joked about Naru and Tsukimori Len looking alike. And just like that I suddenly became active in a fandom for real.
2007 2nd Quarter And then my first stream of requests came in =D. Mostly for Ghost Hunt and, one time, Ouran Koukou for
yamikakyuu. I think at this point I was frustrated because I had no audience for my huge fanarting appetite for Code Geass, my next big fandom =DDDD. I couldn't draw anything else but Lelouch back then.
2007 3rd Quarter Even though I'd had my Intuos3 since the start of the year, I only fully embraced it during my second internship in North California. The good mechanical pencils and blue leads I'd purposely bought for "advanced" drawing purposes were wasted XDDD. Mainly because the pencils I bought didn't have the undo button. At this time I only drew Code Geass and little else. Well, one Terra e which ALMOST became a fandom except it was too... immaculate for fanpandering.
2007 4th Quarter You know the story,
rukawagf. I was still a Geass-only fangirl in North Cali but I converted over to KHR during a transit in Hong Kong O_O. The rest is history.
2008 I like to think I've gotten better at handling the tablet; even graduated to digital inking thanks to seeing all these excellent fanart on
hitman_reborn which forced me to improve! The KHR fandom introduces me to SO MANY talented friends and I love being here so, so much. And I love working at my sweatshop.
My next step? Definitely doujin. And I sincerely hope to see you in August,
festivewind and
kurot. *breathes deeply* TO THE EXTREME.

Thank you for having come this far with me *bows deeply*.
