Day Twelve: Favourite Friendship

Jim and Bruce.

They've worked the two sides of protecting Gotham since the beginning. They have-- look, you know what, I'm just gonna show you, through Greg Rucka's representation. Because you can't stop me.

TURNING POINTS 1

Jim is called to a scene: some guy - a Dr Corbett - has taken a wedding party hostage inside a church. And the negotiator has been laid off for budget reasons, so Gordon finds himself doing the talking himself.

Batman manages to subdue Corbett, who manages to crawl to his bag and retrieve a photo of his dead family as he goes unconscious.

This takes place during No Man's Land. For those who don't know: Gotham went through a series of catastrophes (epidemic of plague, earthquake, epidemic again) and it came to the point that teh US government, 'helped' by Luthor's behind-the-scenes influence, decided to cut Gotham off from the rest of the US. It'd be cheaper than rebuilding the city.

Bruce Wayne tried to appeal to the Senate to convince them not to, but failed, in part because his public persona of a Rich Idiot With No Day Job played against him. Deeply shaken, Bruce left for Europe while Gotham was removed from the US, and stayed there until Talia kicked his ass for letting his city in distress at such a time. (I miss well-written Talia.)

Meanwhile, Jim, and many other in the GCPD, had stayed. In a Gotham suddenly without laws, without food, without electricity. Without Batman. NML as an arc is a year-long Crowning Moment of Awesome for Babs, Jim, Huntress, who all stayed there and fixed Gotham when Batman wasn't there.

When Batman returns, Jim is understandably extremely angry at him, and it's months before Batman approaches him and before Jim lets anyone tell Batman's name where he can hear it.

TEC 741
The end of NML: the immediate background for this scene is that Joker has just killed Sarah Essen-Gordon, Jim's wife, while everyone else hurried to catch him in the GCPD's offices.

Plot complications happen here, because Gordon wasn't by the book here, prompting tension between Montoya and her from-Metropolis partner Cris Allen. In the end, though, they manage to get an adress from the guys they hauled in for questioning.

TURNING POINTS 5
(The whole day, there's this guy who's trying to contact Batman. Or Commissioner Gordon. He's arrived in Gotham with his wife and their young daughter, for the vacation. Except it's not like the GCPD has a phone number for the Batman, or that they take you seriously when you walk in and say you'd like to see either of them, preferably both.)

GK 13 (OFFICER DOWN)
On his first birthday after NML, Jim Gordon is shot and gravely wounded, and everyone, the GCPD and the Batfamily, is trying to find who's responsible. The culprit is caught, but, this being Gotham, he walks.

After he gets out of the hospital, Jim decides to retire. In the first scene he shows the new commissioner around, and they end with the rooftop.

TEC 755
The narrative is done by Sasha Bordeaux, the bodyguard Bruce Wayne was forced to accept unless he wanted the entire board of directors of Wayne Enterprises to hand over their resignation. Sasha privately thinks Bruce Wayne is her most difficult client ever.

TEC 765
The narrative is done by Sasha. After several months, she found out that Bruce was Batman, and a few months after that, he officially took her into his confidence and gave her a mask and a costume.

The story here is that Batman has been spending the night searching and then beating up a small-time robber.
