Leitmotif of the year:
“People are fucked-up, families happen”. Or “Gotham is a place where fucked-up people happen.” But the former is probably always going to be my theme.
My best story of this year:
…that’s an unfair question, I think. I love
Eggshells, and I’m pretty proud of it, but I let my love for the scenarios fuck with the pacing. I’m very happy with
Rewiring, but it must have its problems (the beginning grumblegrumble). I’m quite glad with
Purgatory, too, but it could’ve been better if it’d been more complete.
Nothing’s gonna harm you is my id given story form, and thinly disguised meta, but I think it’s good. Oh, and I’m rather proud of my Yuletide treat, as well, though the writing could be loads better.
My favorite and/or truest story of this year:
Rewiring. I love you Cass.
Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Rewiring. Cass! Cyberpunk! Babs being Oracle!
Most fun story to write:
Advancement Strategies, maybe. Or
Nothing’s gonna harm you, because being
horrible to Bruce does fill me with writerly glee.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Probably
Something sweet and something strong. Or
Flying, now and forever, despite the cuteness and the rating.
The massive prons I thought I’d write never happened, I guess.
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
I stayed within the realm of not too fucked up, this year. I guess one of the Bruce-is-Gotham’s-knight-bitch could fit the bill, but they don’t really hit me in the “this is SO WRONG” part of the brainpan. Or that moment in
For I have sinned where Jason referred to Bruce wanting him back then, which is closer to what I expect from my “oh god wrong” reflex. (Next year: should I or should I not write the SOWRONG pron?)
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
It’s not a game, though it didn’t so much shift my perspective as it let me coalesce my Tim issues. I’m very uneasy talking about it, because I think it’d come close to character bashing and I hate that, and I was almost afraid it would come across that way. But it made me feel for Tim even as I was writing, so I guess I avoided that? And people seem disinclined to call me out on it, so I guess I’m in the clear.
Hardest story to write:
We don’t get drums. Aside from that, I didn’t manage to finish anything that was too hard for me to write this year (once I defeated the YOU’RE USELESS YOU SUCK stage). I’ll try and push myself harder next year.
Biggest disappointment:
We don’t get drums. *kicks* urg I hate you stupid fic. You could’ve been so much better.
I didn’t have enough expectations for the fics I scribbled during the second half of the year to be disappointed.
Biggest surprise:
Made Perfect Sense. So… I wrote a crossover? Really?
Most unintentionally telling story:
Probably
It’s not a game. I knew the others (
Advancement Strategies, the Bruce-is-Gotham’s-bitch fics, the Bruce/Jason pron, and basically anything involving a Batman and a Robin with the possible exception of
When I grow up) would be revealing getting in - though dear lord is Advancement Strategies telling. It’s not a game? Pretty much turns out to be me typing away “Tim Drake is class issues incarnate” and “I only like Tim Drake when he thinks he’s not a proper Robin”.)
What does unintentional mean, really. I’m posting fictions about my narrative kinks focusing on people who routinely dress up as bats or brightly-colored birds, call each other by made-up names they’ve often inherited from other people, and tend to their emotional traumas like one does one’s abusive partner.
Story I haven't yet written, but intend to:
I promise to finish one wip a month for 2012. Related to this year’s fics, I would really like to write the Bruce/Jason fic based on the NML AU of

+ 2 for Yuletide.
First sentence of my ten last fics - discounting the 3-sentence bunch that really turned out to be around 3 sentences, and the original:
When she moves, she reminds him of Cassandra. (DCU/Firefly crossover of Bruce and River.)
Artemis shrugs. (YJ M’gann & Artemis bonding that is h/c to me.)
First she followed Charles' advice. (Marvel Mystique Bildungsfic.)
"He didn't get any sleep last night," M'gann says in hushed tones, pulling on her fingers one after the other. (YJ worrying-about-Robin is a thing.)
In the beginning, Sakura thought she'd miss Hinata for more reasons than her self; Hinata was quiet, and nice, and a girl. (Naruto RL AU. I blame the semi-colon on the fact I thought this would be three-sentence long.)
Red Hood's tinny laugh rings in his ear, courtesy of the earpiece Jason made sure to leave behind. (DCU where Bruce gets his heart shattered, as usual, as is apparent in the first sentence)
“This sucks, boss,” Robin grouches. (DCU about Steph being an Even Robin and Batman trying to repress the Jason parallels.)
All of Regulus' memories are tainted somehow. (HP on Regulus making the right choice.)
For hours the child kneels in his parents' blood. (DCU about Bruce not getting the memo on not following strangers, especially if they’re Gotham.)
“Isn't it, I don't know.” Terra had frowned. “Impractical?” (Kingdom Hearts about Aqua being a Lady of War.)
Here’s how it is when I take away the 3-sentence fics entirely:
“This sucks, boss,” Robin grouches.
All of Regulus' memories are tainted somehow.
For hours the child kneels in his parents' blood.
“Isn't it, I don't know.” Terra had frowned. “Impractical?”
You make me laugh comes out as maybe you stink. (DCU where words aren’t Cass’ friends. I never write that.)
It's easy to recognise when Damian has been patrolling with Steph; he always comes home grumpier. (DCU about Dick and Damian and Steph and some of the problematic aspects of expecting Damian to have a middle-class white American experience of childhood and the difficulties of integration.)
“This was less awkward when we’d switched ages,” Tim said, pulling on the cowl. (DCU Bruce and Tim swap costumes.)
There’s a whisper in the streets, tonight, and a shiver of unrest among those most concerned. (DCU Gotham-vants-your -children, the Gotham edition.)
Nightmares are nothing new, on the whole. (DCU Gotham-vants-your -children, the Renée edition.)
It’s deep in the midst of winter and No Man’s Land that Helena gives up. (DCU Gotham-vants-your -children, the Helena edition.)
Patterns:
I like starting with a short sentence. I like dialogue. I like putting the name of a character in the first sentence when I know I’m writing something short, but it must never be the first word. I like temporality as well as starting in medias res. I overuse semi-colons, especially when I think I’m going to be cheating on the number of sentences.
Most of these sentences are their own paragraphs.
