[DC] Cass/Steph, Batman & Robin

Dec 04, 2011 02:47

I have written/am writing more that I shall post later, but I wanted to put these five up.

1.
Sometimes Cass stops Steph; sometimes Steph stops Cass. More often Cass loomingly exacts answers while Steph smirks and plays with a batarang, tossing her hair behind her shoulder with a flashy jerk of the head, playing the part of the knife-happy trophy sidekick to a tee.

Once, they stop themselves, when they realize that it was just Scarecrow's fear gas, and the other is alright.

2.
“You missed a clue,” Batman says; you need to know her as well as Robin does to perceive the hint of fondness, and exasperation.

“That's what you're for, right? Besides,” Robin slips under Batman's defense, so they're cheek to cheek and Batman's hand is resting, almost by accident, on Robin's skirt, “at least I didn't miss this one,” she breathes, and kisses her.

3. Direct hommage to this fic.
Cass sees the way Batman stands around the Case where he's put his heart on display, and the way he doesn't wince when Steph lets out, uninhibited, a joyous yell.

She sees the way he looks at her when Steph challenges her to another round of rooftop tag and she gives in happily.

He doesn't chide her for spending time with Spoiler rather than with the Mission, and when he tries to make Steph hang up her cowl she's distressingly grateful, and she gives fervent, burning wishes that it'll be enough; she knows how that story ends.

4.
“Ladies,” Alfred's voice comes out very, very dry.

The mewl dies halfway past Stephanie's mouth, and Cassandra freezes with her hand between the other girl's thighs; their capes are tangled together, their costumes showing more skin than is ever advisable to a crime-fighter, and their expressions make him feel like the hunter before Bambi's mother.

He stifles a sigh; it isn't, despite his moment of being taken aback, the first time he's caught Robin propped on the computer, pressed against Batman while they engaged in activities that don't bear mentioning in polite company, so he merely concludes, “your guests have arrived and will be down shortly.”

5. [is not actually 3sentences long at all.]
“That's unnatural, that's what it is,” Damian grumbles. “Batman's not supposed to--”

“Be a girl?” Oracle prods dryly. The tone makes Dick's survival instincts kick in with a vengeance; if he wishes to escape from this unscathed, and maybe to have a chance that Babs will allow him to make it up to her later, he should find a way not to get involved fast.

But Damian's past that issue at least, thankfully. “No!” He scowls. “Batman's not supposed to-- to--”

On the screen, Batman breaks into a wide, silent grin, as Robin splutters. “You cheated!” Robin's voice carries perfectly over Oracle's gear. “You cheated, I can't goddamn believe it, you - come back here!”

“This,” Damian gestures accusingly at the screen. “Batman's not supposed to be cheerful.”

And Robin wasn't supposed to be angry, either. Dick's heard that one before, too. Not before Jason came and made it okay, made it almost an expectation.

Oracle gives her wheels a turn, with a look that ought to remind Damian that she's just as much of a detective as Dick is, and an arch of her eyebrows that's always been lethal to Dick's self-control.

“Oh, really, Brat Wonder. The world's never seen a happy Batman and a Robin who likes to ask questions with violence before.”

Dick shifts. He really should move. A handstand on the back of the sofa sounds like a great idea, but he's not sure he can move without doing something to the equilibrium of the scene. Barbara on one side, Damian on the other, and when they're together and Babs doesn't start by cowing Damian into compliance, he feels like his presence is needed. Like it diffuses something, even when they're not paying attention to him. The balance they've struck when he's there is okay, but Dick wishes they could work out one for when he's-- not. So that he won't feel like whatever he does, he's playing favorites.

And right now, that's a remark that's rife with opportunities for explosions.

Damian only huffs. He does learn.
