Back in Heaven

Drove into Denver about midnight MDT. Gods, I miss this place. Woke up this morning in Boulder, right up against the Front Range. The suck part of this is that I have to go back to Texas. The good part is I will have a free room for me and my family any time we are in Boulder.

The drive up was a nightmare. I was driving a FULLY LOADED 17' U-haul with a 6'x12' trailer attached. We didn't get out until something like 10pm on Friday. Stayed in Witchta Falls. Left around 10am yesterday when the winds hit us. Steady at about 30mph with gusts over 50mph. TOTAL SUCK!!! I could only manage about 50 mph in the truck and that was still blowing me all over the road. The truck fills the whole lane as it is and the wind blew me all over the road. It felt like I was wrestling a 600+ lb. gorilla all the way into Lamar, Co. I thank the Gods, or the Force, or whatever kept me on the fracking road yesterday. The wind didn't let up until we actually entered Colorado. I was getting just under 6mpg with the wind. Probably the scariest driving I have ever done.

I was never so happy to see freeway in all my life when we drove into Limon and picked up I-70. The SH-287 route was different, but I wouldn't recommend it. Too many semis and not nearly wide enough lanes...and it's only two lanes. Nothing like being passed by a semi in the BRICK I was driving when the wind was already blowing at 30+ mph.

Anyway...I-70 was wonderful. The trip was uneventful overall and I'm happy to be in Colorado again, even if it is only for a couple of days.

I'm not sure what we are doing today, but I don't care...I'm in Heaven again...

We came up 287 all the way so I didn't have to deal with the New Mexico High Plains and Raton Pass.
