You'll read a lot of reviews about this movie that talk about great cinematography, dialogue, and the clever interplay between human nature, fate, and good and evil. I suppose all this is true.
As a movie though, No Country for Old Men sucks. Why? Because the Coen brothers, in their quest to make a movie that would win an Oscar, apparently completely forgot the most basic elements of storytelling.
First of all, there is no resolution of conflict. There is a beginning and a middle to the story, but there is no ending, not even an unsatisfactory one. It's as if someone just chopped off the last 45 minutes of the movie. So not only is there no resolution to the conflict, the story doesn't even end.
And on top of that, there is no point to the whole thing. I'm perfectly OK with the fact that the evil guy gets away in the end, he gets no comeuppance, etc. But there doesn't seem to be any message behind the story, not even any attempt at one. OK, so a bunch of people got killed. So what? Give me a reason to care! This movie doesn't.
So even though this film has a number of elements that clueless Oscar voters tend to drool over, as a movie, No Country for Old Men is terrible.
