[Just as she done when Gert arrived, Karolina switches to her Majesdanian form because it's faster to fly to the fountain that it is to walk there. Every second counted just like every emotion that ran through Karolina counted. Would she yell at Xavin first or would she hug her tightly?

As soon as she touches down in front of the fountain, Karolina chooses to do the latter, wrapping her arms around the other girl. There'll be enough time for the other option later. Right now, Karolina just needs to feel Xavin to make sure that this wasn't a hallucination.]

Oh God... tell me you're still alive.

[Xavin's heart skips a beat or three when he sees Karolina, just as it always does, and she wraps her arms around her in response.]

I am still alive, my love, [She pressed the side of her face to Karolina's hair. She thought Molly's cereal-box compass would be enough, but she found it to be a poor substitute when she had Karolina in her arms again. It hadn't been long - it really hadn't - but Xavin had been ready for the separation to last forever.] I'm sorry.

[She is definitely still alive and warm. Karolina pulls back, not necessarily letting go--because she just can't bring herself to do that yet--but just enough for room to give Xavin her overdue scolding because later is now.]

I had to! [Maybe she didn't, maybe there could have been some other way, but she'd still do it again. A million times, even, if it meant keeping Karolina safe.] I would have come back. [And it's a lie, but it's a pretty one and it comes out easily enough. The survivors were out for Karolina's blood, no matter how they dressed it up by calling it "justice," and when they found they had the Skrull son of the warlord who began the war, instead of the Majesdanian girl they had originally come for - well. Xavin wasn't terribly optimistic about her future, though she would certainly never say such things to her beloved.] There was no other way.

You could have let me go! They wanted me and I was willing to go. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if they had did something horrible to you.

[She still can't bring herself to say that one word that begins with a K in reference to Xavin. It bothers her that the girl she's grown to love had come so close to such an end. The guilt would have eaten Karolina alive.]

[And Xavin can defend herself much better than Karolina can, but she is sooo not saying that bit out loud.] I told you, as a Skrull, I can begin to make amends for what my parents, my people have done to them- [Not that chances were terribly good that they would have let her, but still-] As Majesdanian, you couldn't!

[And really, he knows that Karolina will be able to live in her absence, because Karolina is strong in all the ways that Xavin is not. She survived the loss of her parents, the loss of her teammates, she would survive the loss of her betrothed too. In time.]

I would neve- [A guilty look crosses Xavin's face, because okay, she did hurt her- but it was best that way. If she had simply allowed Xavin to leave, perhaps the guilt really would have crushed her, and it wasn't a risk Xavin was willing to take. If she had no choice in the matter, it was better for her.] There was- limited time, you never would have agreed to it!

[The expression that flashes across Xavin's face stops Karolina in her tracks. What was that expression? Guilt? She's still a bit too riled up to try and figure it out now.]

You know I wouldn't- [Xavin cuts herself off, because it's rapidly becoming clear that Karolina doesn't know she would never hurt her just to get her way, and that realization hurts. A lot.] It wasn't like that at all!

I had to. [Because no matter how many times this situation duplicates itself - no matter how many Skrull invasions or angry Majesdanians - and no matter how mad she gets, Xavin will always put Karolina's safety above all else. Even if the 'all else' is her freedom to choose to be safe or not.]

[Karolina knows Xavin would never hurt her. In fact, she knows that they wouldn't be arguing right now if Xavin really wanted to hurt her. The months of being away from those she loved, the months of being alone in the City is what's driving most of her side of the fight. She has had enough of being alone; she didn't want to risk losing one more person in her life, especially one she was supposed to spend the rest of her life.]

You did not. [Karolina's voice softens as she feels the pain she felt in the days following that event rushing back to her.] Did you even think about how I felt after you were gone?

[There's a long pause, and then Xavin finds herself looking down. There are not many things that she would back down from, even with Karolina, and she does like to think she is good at making tough decisions when she is called upon to do so, but... she can tell by the sudden change in tone of Karolina's voice that this isn't really an argument. It's just a lot of pent-up pain spilling out.] ... No. [She may be a day late and a dollar short with that realization, but at least she came to it at all.] I'm sorry. [Not sorry that she chose to go in Karolina's place, but definitely sorry that it hurt her. She reaches up to touch the side of Karolina's face, hoping she doesn't get spurned for it - not that she wouldn't deserve to be.] I'm sorry.
