IC:
Character name: Toph Bei Fong
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Timeline: Post-canon; Toph's been at disturbia_rp for a while, and will retain memories from there.
Age: 13

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Toph is the GREATEST EARTHBENDER IN THE WORLD! At least, she is in her own estimation. This means that she can manipulate earth (including but not limited to mud, dirt, rock, stone, concrete, and to a degree, sand). She also has two fairly unique abilities: for one, she's skilled enough to manipulate metal almost as easily as she does earth. Secondly, Toph was born blind, and uses metalbending and earthbending to see: she feels the vibrations under her feet and translates this into a mental 'picture' or her surroundings.

Appearance: Toph is tiny! She's about 4"11', if that, with black hair and pale green eyes (which are rocking some serious cataracts, jsyk.) In our terms, she'd appear ethnically Chinese. She normally wears wide green calf-length shorts and a loose green top, with a pale yellow tunic worn over this, and secured with a thick leather belt. She hates wearing shoes, since they get in the way of her ability to 'see'. She's fond of hairbands, armbands, anklebands - bands seem to be her accessory of choice, really.

Background/Personality: In many ways, Toph behaves in exactly the way you might expect an overprotected twelve-year-old runaway to. She's messy, blunt, scornful of rules, grumpy, often self-centred - not in the sense that she intentionally chooses to put herself first, but that it simply doesn't occur to her to consider other perspectives - and stubborn. She refuses to back down from a fight; she enjoys taking risks.

Toph is the only child of one of the richest families in the Earth Kingdom. Her existence is not commonly known, however; her parents believe that her disability is debilitating enough that she must be shielded from the world entirely, and protected from dangers such as hot soup and difficult breathing exercises. This has never suited Toph's adventurous and confrontational nature, and it seems like she had an unhappy childhood - she mentions at least two separate incidences of running away, though it's likely these were interpreted as 'getting lost' by her parents. Despite being an intensely skilled earthbender, Toph's earthbending teacher has restricted her to basic breathing exercises for the past six years.

Toph dislikes being underestimated but is equally annoyed by her blindness being entirely ignored. She has a tendency to point - accurately - while conversing or arguing, as if to remind whoever she's speaking with that she can locate things; on the other hand, she'll make joking or sarcastic comments drawing attention to her disability. She wants people to know what she can and cannot do and act accordingly.

Toph can essentially 'see' the size and shape of anything that's touching the ground, or that's resting on something that's touching the ground. She can also tell how far these things are from her, and in what direction/at what speed they're moving. This means she can sense things in all directions, or through thin walls; additionally, she can locate caverns or tunnels underground. Walking on sand makes things 'fuzzy', since sand shifts too much; she can't see in water, or if traveling through the air. (However, she can see if she's standing on metal, as metal is essentially refined earth.) She can't read. She can't tell if something is thrown at her. She can only distinguish objects via shape and density - to tell a tube of toothpaste apart from a tube of antiseptic (for example) she'd have to investigate a little more thoroughly.

Toph is not above using her family's status, her physical stature or her blindness to her advantage. In one episode, she and Sokka begin turning the tables on scammers by presenting Toph as a naive and vulnerable target; in another, she uses her knowledge of high society (and her family's name) to sneak herself and Katara into a ball. Once she's on the road with the others, Toph chooses to let go of her high class manners. When she first joins the group she is overjoyed by the prospect of not having to obey rules or act nicely, and it takes some time before she understands how to contribute to daily tasks.

With her friends Toph is boisterous and rough, expressing affection through play-fights or teasing. As a teacher she's demanding and harsh. She often argues with people, and while she's quick to apologise afterwards, while she's angry she can be difficult to reason with. However, she's also very difficult to insult. When the gang goes to see a play based on their stories, Toph is the only one who is pleased by her portrayal - as a tall, muscle-bound, dim-witted male earthbender. She's irritated by attempts to patronise her or to control her behaviour, and despite their close friendship often clashes with Katara, the 'mother' of the group. Now that she has her freedom she values it highly, reacting with disdain when they're given a minder in Ba Sing Se.

When fighting, Toph is a dangerous foe - as well as being able to preempt many of her opponents moves by paying close attention to the vibrations they give off while moving, she is the only known person in the world to employ metal-bending: utilising the impurities in metal to control them. (This also means that she's able to 'see' while in an entirely metal environment, such as the Fire Nation warships.)

While she lived with her parents, Toph appears to have conformed as best she could to their idea of her as a vulnerable child - or, as her father puts it, as 'blind, tiny, helpless, and fragile'. When Aang first suggests that she join them, she expresses a desire to come along but declines, for the sake of her parents. When her father finds out about her taking part in tournaments, she expresses a worry that it will change the way they feel about her. Running away seems to be her main way of rebelling against them, and now that she's actually succeeded her feelings are extremely mixed - although her talk of hating them or feeling unloved by them is mostly normal adolescent doubt and anger.

By the end of the series Toph is essentially a war hero, an earth-bending master, creator of a whole new bending skill and instrumental in defeating the Fire Nation forces.

Why should that character be in this game: N/A

Why do you want to continue their history here: For one thing, it means Toph is already used to the concept of other worlds. She's also made some progress in a few ways: she wants to learn braille, a system of reading that her own world doesn't have, and she's improved her sandbending skills dramatically. OH OH and she made friends with some Star Trek characters and will be totally psyched to be living in a spaceship.

EDITED TO ADD: ~*~Toph's History at Disturbia!~*~

Perhaps surprisingly, Toph largely stayed out of trouble in Disturbia - apart from an intensified dislike of Azula, that is. One of A:TLA's main antagonists, Azula is manipulative, dangerous, and had seriously injured several of Toph's friends during the course of the series. Without her friends around, Toph felt like she had to both defend her their honour and keep any of her new friends from falling for Azula's ploys. This lead to a street battle in which both girls destroyed quite a lot of property, and landed Toph with a broken arm. ... oops.

Toph regards her friends in canon as family, and missed them horribly in her time in Disturbia. But she also made several new friends, particularly Star Trek: Voyager's Seven of Nine. Unimpressed by modern technology and 21st-century western food, Toph spent a lot of time trying to charm, bully or earn her way into getting free meals from people. She also came up with several schemes to make more money, including trying to get work as a landscape artist or making simple jewellry - and under Seven's influence, became interested in learning how to read braille. She managed to mostly stay out of the (often-deadly) rivalry between Death Note's Mello and Katekyo Hitman Reborn!'s Belphegor - except for lecturing Mello, whom she got on quite well with, about the stupidity of killing. Despite being a fighter and a war hero, Toph still believes that it's a sign of skill (and general humanity) to be able to take down enemies without killing them.

1st person sample: This entire place is made out of metal. It reminds me of those Fire Nation airships we stormed - that was pretty sweet. Did I even tell you guys about that? Whatever, no big deal, I just helped bring down like fifty massive war machines. All in a day's work for Toph Bei Fong, War Hero and Kicker of Butts, not to mention Only Known Metalbender Ever. You skinny little boys ain't got nothing on me.

I'm not gonna lie, though, I kind of miss being on the ground. Isn't there anywhere we can go to? You know, with earth? Not that being in space isn't cool and all (and I though space was supposed to be more spiritual, what with the comets and stars and spirits and whatnot) but a girl could do with a bit of good old-fashioned rock every now and then.

3rd person sample: Toph leaned against the wall, absent-mindedly digging a finger into one nostril. The gang had been based in the Western Air Temple for some time now, long enough for her to know it like the soles of her feet. Helping to repair the place after Combustion Man's attacks had only helped; she put the palm of her free hand against the wall behind her, satisfied that the inversed temple was securely fixed to the cliffside again.

Not only had the repair work been an interesting challenge, it had given something to do while everyone sat around being awkward and weird about Zuko. Toph had mostly worked off her anger by making him carry her around while her feet were hurt, but the boy was so stupid and desperate to take the blame for everything bad ever that beating on him wasn't as much fun as it could have been.

She sighed, withdrawing a finger and flicking unhappily. Time for another walk to the top of the cliff, where she could practice bending in peace. Hauling herself up from her position against the wall, Toph felt something - something odd, a far-off quiver under her feet, like the ripples of some weird, wriggly avalanche. She shifted immediately into a defensive position - what was this, another attack? An earthquake?

"Guys!" She could feel Teo wheeling towards her, Appa pacing unhappily. "Guys, I think something is --"

And that's when things got really weird.

Questions?: Why am I still awake?
