Notes: Isabel is 21, Lyssia is 23. No, seriously. These two have managed to avoid this issue for an incredible long time, especially considering how Isabel can't flat-out lie about it.
They stood side by side, awkwardly, unwilling to look at each-other but even more unwilling to walk away.
“So,” Lyssia said finally. “This is it.”
“Yes.”
“You won't reconsider?”
“No.” Isabel had become quieter and quieter the faster this day approached; it seemed that she was now almost completely monosyllabic.
“I...” Lyssia looked down. “I'll miss you, you know.” She was extremely uncomfortable with this statement, all the more because it was true.
And because it was true, Isabel could tell; and she looked at Lyssia somewhat incredulously, although this meant she ended up staring at the back of her friend's head. “Lyss...?”
She turned, very slightly. Still not facing her friend, Lyssia asked, “What?”
As an answer, Isabel gently turned Lyssia's face towards her and - extremely hesitantly, it must be said - kissed her.
Lyssia was the first to pull away. “What the hell was that?” she sputtered.
“That, if I'm not mistaken,” Isabel replied lightly, “was you kissing back. I'll see you, Lyss, in three years if nothing else.” She walked away.
Lyssia stood there, one hand pressed to her mouth, for quite some time. Eventually, she shook herself, turned and walked away quickly. She had things to do, she told herself, and could not afford to be distracted.
