The surrounding area made Hikaru feel like he was visiting Santa’s workshop instead of visiting with his mother. Christmas lights adorned every store and if there weren’t lights there were just as many Christmas trees and Santas. It wasn’t unlike Japan; his home country probably was a country of Christmas lights right now. Hikaru gave an amused scoff at that thought as he passed by the stores and onto the freeway. He had some time to kill before meeting up and drives always calmed his nerves. Just like always, it never failed.
Hikaru turned his Aston Martin into the parking lot of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. It was a favorite spot of Chinatsu’s. Fixing his gray duffel coat, Hikaru entered the front doors calling his mother on her cell phone. He waited patiently until he heard her abnormally demure voice.
“Moshi moshi?”
“Okaa? Daijobudesu ka? Are you alright?”
Chinatsu tried her best to hide the shaking that was behind her voice but failed horribly. “Hai. I-I’m fine.” She sniffed and that was enough for Hikaru to handle over the phone.
He asked for her location and when she gave it to him, headed in that direction. Walking into a white and beige room full of stone like artifacts on the wall, he found his mother sitting on a small couch like seat. She seemed hunched over as if she was or had been crying and that quickened his walk to a jog. When Hikaru found himself facing his mother, he kneeled down to grab her soft slender hands.
“Why are you crying, Okaa?” He asked, his eyebrows furrowing.
Chinatsu tried to keep her composure with deep breaths, but when she looked into Hikaru’s dark yet concerned eyes, she couldn’t contain herself and sobbed into his arms as he embraced her.
“Okaa-san, you’re worrying me. What is going on?”
Chi stopped crying to look up into her son’s eyes. “I just can’t do this anymore, Hikaru. I can’t keep being the peace keeper in this family. I can’t pretend that all of this is all right!”
As she collapsed into more sobs, Hikaru did his best to comfort her. Chinatsu seemed like an anxious wreck and so many things were running through Hikaru’s mind about what the reason could be. “Okaa…nobody is asking you to be a peace keeper. This that’s going on is between Otou and myself.”
“I love to believe that, son. But you both forget that I’m right there in the middle. The middle man, you understand me?” She gave a nervous laugh as she continued her rant. “Your father comes to me to complain about you and you come to me to see what he’s doing behind your back. Even now. You’re visiting me to find out what’s going on with him.”
Hikaru didn’t deny it, but he was genuinely worried about his mother’s well being and told her so.
“Goshinpai arigato gozaimazu. Thank you for concern. But from this day on, I won’t be your father’s doormat and I will not be your communicator, Hikaru. Kotowaru! I refuse! Whatever you two have going on needs to be fixed between you two and ONLY you two!”
Hikaru gave a curt nod as he held his mother tighter. His heart constricted at how his mother looked and felt and he felt so badly that he hadn’t even tried to figure out how she was taking all of this. She was always one to keep things to herself, always trying to put others happiness before her own. This time she was paying a huge price for both his and his father’s selfishness.
I understand, Okaa. Gomen nasai. I will try to make things work, all right? If I have to come back for Friday dinners to make some kind of peace then I will. What matters is that you are happy right now.” Fingers brought Chinatsu’s face to her son’s. “I will do anything to make that happen.”
Hikaru’s words seemed to calm his mother and she nodded against his chest, sighing. Hikaru cleared his throat before smiling down. “Come. Let’s take a walk. I’m pretty sure there is more to see in this museum than this bland room, correct?”
Chinatsu managed a chuckle and feeling satisfied with that, Hikaru helped her up before the both of them walked out, arm in arm.
