Somehow I thought this was going to be cute, based on the description, but... wow that's bleak. I get the feeling Lucas and Kia are just holding on. At least the kids don't seem too badly off, even if it's just because they don't seem to realise everything that's happening?

The kids are remarkably hardy in all of this. Kia's been part of the group for a long time (back when there were definitely more adults) and they trust her, so there's a lot of contentment among the kids when she's there.

Lucas is very new to the equation and he's definitely stunned by their way of life, too. It's not a good one, by any means. They're just struggling to get by.
