“Hello, we have reservations for two.” Hikaru told the hostess at the restaurant that he had brought Aija to. The woman glanced at the two in slight confusion which got deeper as Hikaru put his hand on Aija’s hip. At his questionable eyebrow, the embarrassed hostess bowed before showing the two to their seats. After making sure Aija was comfortable, Hikaru looked around before excusing himself to the restroom.

While alone however, Aija noticed all the stares coming in her direction. Stares that asked so many things such as why was the son of the Mizuno CEO with somebody such as her? or why did he bring her here? but most of all, why a black woman? But Aija kept her discomfort from being seen and took a sip of her water; inwardly wondering where the waiter was.

Suddenly she was all too aware that somebody had came up to her table and she glanced down at the black couture heels before gazing up into a umimpressed woman’s face. My, she seemed familiar.

“Ah, hello there again, Aija. We meet again.” The woman said in a very forced English.

Aija frowned trying to figure out who it was and the conversation a few days before flashed into her mind. She smiled at the woman setting down her water glass.

“Yes, we do, Mizuki. How are you?”

“I’m well as I hope you are too. You know, it’s customary for tourists to call people they don’t know with san at the ends of their names. Out of respect, you understand.”

Aija bristled at the way Mizuki sneered out the word tourists, but then she put her hands in her lap and said, “Well you have to forgive me, as I am still learning how to do things here.”

Mizuki looked stunned down at Aija, not at all keeping her words in check. “I would have expected a teacher of etiquette to know more about our culture. You are…a etiquette teacher, are you not?”

Aija was taken aback but concealed it with a syrupy sweet smile. “You talk about etiquette, but you’re the one here at our table uninvited. Don’t you think it’s quite rude to just allow yourself to hang around here right when we are about to have dinner?”

Mizuki frowned. “We?” She asked.

“We.”

She turned to look at Hikaru who had made it back to the table he shared with Aija. He stood near his chair staring at the visitor. “Mizuki-san. What a surprise to see you here? Who are you with?” He asked, his eyes searching for her family.

“Do I need to be here with somebody, Hikaru? Can’t a woman have dinner for herself here.” Mizuki replied back with a flip of her hair in fluent Japanese, knowing that Aija couldn’t possibly understand.

Hikaru was one step ahead of her holding his hand out toward his fiancée. “I know you know English so I’d appreciate it if you would speak it in front of Aija.”

Mizuki gave a sugary smile to Aija but her eyes were pointed and flaming in her direction. “Very well.” She said, just as sweet and Aija had to resist the urge to roll her eyes.

“You know, next time I come here you should join me, Hikaru. Maybe tell me the better choices of food on the menu.”

Aija fumed at the audacity of this woman moving in on her man, but all of her lessons with Evelyn made her the better woman and she just kept up her smile. Hikaru however wasn’t as content with it. “Actually, it’s my first time here so I won’t be able to help you with that. I’m sure I’ll find something with Aija.”

Smiling with love at his answer, Aija began looking at her menu, praising the Lord that there were English translations underneath the words. Mizuki on the other hand looked like she was fit to kill, but she swallowed it and said, “I will excuse myself then. Wouldn’t want to interrupt your dinner. Good night.”

Hikaru said his good night, but making sure she was the last on in Mizuki’s mind, Aija popped her head up and made her smile as big as she could make it. “You have a good night, Mizuki. Have a good rest of your dinner to yourself.”

She then laughed as Mizuki turned on her heel and nearly stomped off. Looking up at Hikaru who was shaking his head, she then motioned to his seat and said just as sweet, “Shall we?”
