Summary: The Verne family attends a party thrown in honor of their patriarch.

Note(s): I have posted one piece from this story here. I find I work best with my future novels by getting my ideas out and this is my favorite way to do it. A little background about this story. The Verne family is dysfunctional but to the outside world they appear to be the perfect family. The main character is Seraphina who is about 16 in this. Even she doesn't realize this yet. A comment she makes to her teacher is what the story in motion.
“Ladies and gentlemen we would like to welcome Donald Verne.”
The crowd was filled with polite applause. Seraphina watched as her father left his seat and made his way to the podium.
“Your father looks handsome doesn’t he?” Her mother asked.
Seraphina nodded though she wasn’t really paying attention. She was surprised her mother was here tonight. She usually didn’t leave the house. But she supposed that this was a different story since her father was receiving a prestigious award.
Her father cleared his throat. He was standing in front of the podium. He was dressed in sleek grey Tom Ford suit and his hair was cropped close to his head. He didn’t appear to be nervous.
“It’s an honor to be here today,” he started. His glanced across the room. “I’ve been working at this company for over twenty years now. I hope to take it beyond our state’s borders, beyond our nation’s borders. I want to take it international.”
Someone gave an emphatic yeah in the crowd. Donald smiled.
“It will be with all of you that this is possible. Thank you.”
The applause was louder this time. He stepped to side to speak with someone. Seraphina turned to her mother.
“Well that was nice,” she commented.
“Yeah it was--.”
“It would have been nicer if he had thanked his family,” she said.
Seraphina didn’t say anything. She slipped off her shoes and pulled up her chair. She wondered what they were serving.
