RATING: PG
NOTES: Hugh has been in other pieces I've posted. This is the beginning of the very long, tumultuous, complicated relationship that he and Vala share.

“Can I kiss you?” He asked and it seemed absurd. She looked over at him with an eyebrow raised. He gripped the bow in his hands so tightly it looked like he might snap it in half. His eyes were wide and dark and nervous. She tilted her head and smiled at him, allowing her eyes to take in the sight of him. He was tall and gangly with messy hair and a chipped front tooth. Clad in black leather and white fur she could have named him of barbarian blood even without the Fenerrs’ family crest sewn to his chest and embossed on the shining wood of his hunting bow. Of course, that was just on sight. She had spent the day with Hugh Fenerrs and the more she got to know him the less he seemed the perfect barbarian boy. She had known his brother for years, this was the first time that Lord Fenerrs had brought Hugh to visit Shore Shine, and Broderick was always tough and fierce and wild. Hugh was calm and shy and skittish. She wondered if he felt as out of place in the world as she did.

“You’re really asking and not just going to do it?” He shifted and bit his lip, casting his eyes downwards on the leaves he was currently stepping on. They were going to lose the bet. Broderick and Giles were going to be the first to catch something. Suddenly it didn’t seem to matter. This was more interesting.

“Oh, I don’t know. I thought I should. Was it wrong to do?” He rambled. His cheeks were burning red. Vala reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. She was only slightly shorter than he was. His eyes jumped to hers at the touch. She gave him a squeeze through his layers of hunting gear in a reassuring gesture.

“No. Asking is good.” With a sure step she closed the distance between them and brought her mouth to his. She wasn’t particularly attracted to Hugh Fenerrs. The broken tooth in the front of his mouth had occupied most of his appearance in her mind. But she felt dull trembling in her stomach now as their lips met. No one had ever asked her before. She had been kissed by two different boys before Hugh and neither had given a second thought to her opinion. She wondered what would have happened if she had pulled away from them. A shudder ran through her at the thought and Hugh instinctively wrapped his arms around her waist and drew her in.

His lips were dry and chapped, but his kisses were light. Vala threw her arms around his neck and pulled his mouth down. She opened her mouth against his and nipped at his bottom lip until he opened as well. She could almost have rolled her eyes at how tentatively he touched his tongue to hers. It was very likely he had never kissed a girl before. The thought pushed her forwards and the trembling in her gut became goosebumps on her skin. The woods around them were quiet enough that she could hear their heavy breathing, the excited noises that built in the back of Hugh’s throat.

She took a step forward and leaned up into him, her hips brushing against his. He gasped and it broke their kiss. They simply stood for a moment with their shoulders and chests rising and falling noticeably as they tried to catch their breath. The edges of Hugh’s mouth twitched upwards in a smile. Vala felt herself smiling at the sight. She leaned in again and placed a gentle kiss on the side of his mouth. He laughed-giggled really-and moved his hands up her back and squeezed her shoulders. He laughed again and pressed his forehead to hers. He was smiling broadly now.

“I’m really glad I asked,” he said and Vala could tell that he was. It was written all over his face and she wondered how oblivious she must have been to not notice his growing affection. She was glad he had asked also, but for a different reason. Instead of responding she kissed him again, her tongue sliding easily into his mouth as his followed suit. His arms pulled her into a tight hug as their mouths hungrily connected. She liked the way his chipped tooth felt when she ran her tongue along it. She liked the way it made him shiver against her. She liked everything about the moment. Maybe she even liked Hugh Fenerrs.
