Pain. That was the first thing that registered in Chaison’s mind as his eyes opened and tried hard to focus. He was upside down in the car and his heart leapt into his throat as he looked at where his mother would have been. She wasn’t there and Chaison remembered that she had been thrown from the car; she was known to sometimes not wear her seatbelt, even thought it irked Chaison something awful. Right now the only thing that mattered to Chaison was finding his mother. He unbuckled his seatbelt, testing his legs to make sure they were fine. They were and he maneuvered himself so that he could climb out from the busted up and slightly twisted car window. The car was totaled and the Arizona heat was hot on Chaison’s head and back. There was nobody in sight and that scared him but not as much as not knowing where is mother was.

“Mama!” He yelled out. Chaison’s voice was crackling with panic and shock. He had never been in a car accident before and now knew that he never wanted to again. For a moment he heard nothing, and tears came to his eyes. Where was she?

“Mama, please…Say something!”

“Chaise?” A feeble voice called out and Chaison searched everywhere for it. He let out a choked cry as he saw his mother face down on the desert ground, still as can be. He ignored the pounding pain in his head and ran up to her. Holly was breathing fast and seeing her son coming up, she let out tears from her eyes in relief. “You…you’re all right, son?” she gasped out. Chaison kneeled down to her and put his hand on her side, pulling back as she winced.

“Yes, ma’am. I’m ok. I banged my head pretty good but I’m all right other than that. You…you don’t look so good, Mama.”

Holly tried not to laugh; her body was pretty much broken everywhere but she wasn’t going to tell her son that. “Yeah, well I don’t feel all that good, baby.”

“What can I do, Mama? What should I do?”

Holly winced again. “You need to find help, Chaison. I need an ambulance or anybody that can help us get out of here. We’re in the desert and we can’t stay here long ok?”

Chaison nodded and then stood up looking up at the sky. There were clouds that seemed to be gathering and despite that, Chaison knew that he wanted to move his mother to the shaded part of the totaled SUV. He looked down seeing that his mother’s eyes were closed and that she was unconscious, he quickly reached down and pulled her down the 20 steps or so backwards to the wreck. He laid her down and ran off to find the next person who drove down. He knew even in his thirteen year old mind that she didn’t have much time.
