I opened my eyes, blinking the sleep out of them as I looked around, remembering the events of the day before; of running away from home and my father.
Turning my head to the side, I heard Nate’s voice. “Mornin’, Kat.”
I smiled. “Morning,” I sat up. “So, what are we having for breakfast?”
Nate shrugged. “Whatever we can find.”
I fell back onto the hay. “Wow… I didn’t bring anything to eat…”
Nate patted my head before laying down beside me. “I’ll get you food; don’t worry.” He put his arm around my shoulder, pulling me close.
“I’m not,” I buried my face in his arm, hiding my smile, dismissing depressing thoughts. Would my father snatch me from Nate’s hold?
~.~
“I told you,” Nate flung his arms out in front of him. “I’d get you food.”
I raised an eyebrow. “A poor persons bakery?” I looked over the shop as I scratched my head. “I don’t think so.”
Nate sighed. “It’s because you’re rich, isn’t it?”
I turned my head to the side. “I’m not anymore,” I huffed.
“Does that mean you regret leaving with me?” Nate snapped. “I thought you loved me…” He turned his head to the side.
“Of course not!” I raised my voice louder than I had meant to. “And I do love you,” I placed my hand on his shoulder but removed it when he flinched. “Do you love me?” I turned my head to the side, looking at the ground. “Or should I go back home?”
Nate turned to look at my tear stained face. “Kat, I won’t force you to stay with me. If you can’t take this lifestyle with me, then yes, you should.”
I spun my head around and stared up at him with wide eyes. I didn’t think he’d actually tell me to return home, I thought he would ask me not to go. “Then, I will.” Letting my anger overcome me, I stomped my feet like a little child as I walked away from him.
“Kat!” Nate called out to me. “You left because your father was going to lock you up! It was for your own good!”
I turned back around to look at him. “So?” I asked before I changed my direction once more.
“He’ll kill you, Kat.” Nate took one step forward. “Don’t go back,” he reached his arm out towards me. “Please, stay here, with me.”
