My mouth open, gaping in awe, I turned all around me. “Time.. has… stopped…?” The animals, the wind, the trees. Everything. It all stood still. “Stop!” I yelled, slamming my hand against the nearest Ashwood. Pulling it back, I shook it out, a blue glow emanating. “What…?!” I gasped, taking a step back, birds in the trees chirping. Stealing a glance around me, I cursed under my breath. Time had returned to normal. My eyes opening wide, I stared at my hand. “Oh my lands…” scared half to death, I bolted for the house, running at top speed.

“Katrine, you’re late,” my father’s loud, deep voice boomed.

I bowed my head, staring at my boots.

Raising his eyebrow, my father continued to question me. “And what do you have to say for yourself, young lady?”

Keeping my head low and my voice loud, I answered him. “I’m sorry, sir.”

“Now,” my father pointed to a seat, “sit.”

Nodding my head, I settled in the cushioned armchair.

“As of last week,” father sat in his desk chair. “You are 14 years of age. And with that comes change.”

I nodded my head.

Father leaned forward on his desk, towards me. “You have to act like a young woman,” he held one finger up. “And you have to meet suters.”

I opened my eyes wide. “But, father!”

He raised his hand at my protest. “And no running off to see that friend of yours.” He put his hand back in his lap. “If you don’t obey, I’ll have to put you in the tower.”

I stared at him. Was this really my father?  The anger welled up in my veins, small things rising up around me.

My father stood, his eyes wide, mouth down to his chin. “I knew it!” He reached his hand out towards me. “In the tower. Now!” He yelled, causing me to jump.

“Never!” I screamed, running from his study, his house.

I didn't stop until I reached my friend, Nate.  We had been planning to run and hide; to get me away from my father. Now, we had to leave.

Spotting Nate in the yard, I raised my voice ever so slightly. “Nate!” I got his attention. “Code red!”

The sun behind the clouds, we walked side by side, our bags on our shoulders. Looking down the road in front of us, I reached my hand out. “Hold my hand, Nate.”
