She should bake.

That was the first thought passing through Jian Wan Long’s mind, followed by a stream of muddled thoughts that opened her eyes. The view of freshly painted ceiling calmed the stream, overlaid by a temporary silence that will be broken soon.

The futon was her castle now; the blanket her walls, securely wrapping around her body. Rarely did she lack the resolve to wake up in the morning (unless she was sick, and even then not waking up had always been shameful), and so Wan Long broke her walls and exited her castle; she was awake.

Sunlight gave its cold morning light to the small room as she opened the window. The futon laid still on the tatami, only to be folded later. A wooden drawer stood in the corner; intricately carved. A full body mirror stood beside it, its borders painted with colorful flowers. Two small baskets near the door. She liked it clean. Others called it empty. She didn’t care for the difference.

Wan Long took off her shirt and skirt, carefully folding them into neat bundles. As if waiting for her next move, her own reflection stood there inside the mirror: long black hair that reached her back, a body used to inaction, and inked dragons that began to dance; circling up and down around her body. Black eyes glanced at the mirror, and to their side, pointed ears that, in this city, was a sign of elven influence. A half-elf, they would say. Her people saw it as a blessing; signs for the children of the dragon.

They were just ears.

It’s still terrifyingly comforting, how her actions, her role, her purpose on her own world had become distant memories now, a fading dream in this city.

She looked at the baskets. The white shirt should be washed separately, so she placed it in one basket, then dropped the skirt into another. Perhaps she should wash Axel’s clothes together. That would conserve the water. She gazed at one side of the wall.

What was he doing now? Was he sleeping? Had he? She knew he had a shift in the Archive today- and her, a free day- but she now knew how he could forgo sleep for his research and observation, and that concerned her. A lot.

As much as Wan Long had often suggested, advised, told, even scolded him to get proper rest, she could only do so much to sway his resolve. She knew; she stubbornly held her decision as frequent as him.

She showered. Scented soaps and other hair products gifted to her laid unused. They did not disturb her this time as she pondered her next plan. Should she went there? There’s just a door separating the two of them now….

She restrained. The way she saw herself in him was both a source of fondness and disturbance, and for the first time in centuries she became the one watching someone else advancing, all despite the risk waiting ahead. Was there someone, anyone she disturbed and hurt with her stubbornness back then?

It was a day off. And she should bake.
