Title: Magic Shows and Miracles

Story: Crossfire - RP

Flavor(s): Teaberry 6 (colours seen by candlelight will not look the same by day)

Toppings/Extras: Malt (Musical Chairs Challenge - Frank Turner, “Substitute”), Cherry (two POVs)

Rating: PG13 for implied swearing

Word Count: 275 (23 of which belong to Stephen Schwartz, 23 to Elizabeth Barrett Browning)

Notes: Yes, this is essentially the buildup to a Pippin reference. Then again, Monique's whole character is a Pippin reference, so...

She was the first girl I ever, well, had. I thought she was some kind of visionary, warrior for justice, smoldering with a will to save the world, what have you. And she knew it. And she used it, to get me to play into her hand. I fought right beside her, and I used to think, maybe, maybe she just left me for her ideologies. But we both knew that was a lie.

He was the last boy who actually loved me, and by the end he saw me for exactly what I was, and still had no idea what I was doing to the world. What I was doing to him. Not that it mattered. Not that it mattered that I choked him with the smoke from my fires of revolution even as I lit him in one, glorious, perfect, all-consuming flame. It never mattered.

And you know what she loved the most? Gucking music. I think she used it as a substitute.

And you know what he chose, in the end? Gucking police force. I think he used it as a substitute.

Something to shower affection on more than me.

Something to be pathetically devoted to, other than me.

Or maybe just another thing to make spontaneously combust for her own amusement.

Or maybe just another dream to watch die and flicker out like a candlelight.

She showed me crimson, gold, and lavender,

a shining parade,

but there's no color I can have on earth

that won't finally fade...

“Yes!” I answered you last night;

“No!” this morning, Sir, I say!

Colours, seen by candle-light,

Will not look the same by day.
