Oh yeah, I can’t remember if I mentioned Rhubarb is a Butterscotch sundae? It is.

The silence was the worst. I brought it upon myself, I guess; I’d resolved that it wasn’t a good idea to antagonize the most influential (if not powerful) mage in the world when she could have my dead body dance the mambo in front of the other staff members, so I swallowed my objections to how she ran things. Which left me saying absolutely nothing at the staff meetings.

In turn, she began to ignore me - which inexplicably stung. Even when I had to go to her directly - plead for funds and the like - we spoke in tense, almost monosyllabic terms. She did not deny my requests any more than she did anyone else, but it was clear there was a line between her personal wish to throttle me (mutual!) and her professional need to keep me around. But… though I still hated her and rolled my eyes most unprofessionally at her every order, some part of me missed the bickering. It made things interesting.

Of course, the stalemate couldn’t last, and all it took was one of the more… naive faculty asking if everyone couldn’t “just get along” to make the threat of my own death, and her professional interests, irrelevant.

And that is how the first College of Magic exploded. True story.
