Jake sat up in bed with a grin. Things were going to be different now, he was eight years old today. Bounding out of bed he ran down the stairs in his bare feet.
“Dad!” The living room was empty, the door to the kitchen stood half open. “Dad?” He pushed the kitchen door open a little more and peered around it. His dad sat slumped over the kitchen table, head on his arms, snoring. Empty bottles littered the table and the smell of stale beer hung heavily in the air. There were no presents. No cake. No shiny new bike. Shoulders slumped, Jake turned and made his way slowly back up the stairs.
