"Kisses"
Angela was sitting at the kitchen table when she heard the front and screen door open and close. She had been reading the book her English class had assigned her over the summer but lifted her head in anticipation for the person to walk down the hallway or to walk into the kitchen. No one appeared through, and she frowned. The creaking of the wooden floorboards stopped, and she didn’t hear either the front or side door open. Quietly, Angela got up from her chair after marking her place in her book and stepped around the kitchen table to peer into the living room.

Harluthenax stood by the bookshelf with something shiny in his hands. He dusted off one of the shelves before placing the white, glossy bauble on it. Angela frowned curiously and approached him. It was a small, cat trinket with a diamond, jeweled collar. She doubted they were real diamonds, but they were still shiny and clear. All of the cat was white except for its blue, false sapphire eyes and soft red collar. Its tail curled out, and there was a sweet smile on its face.

“For Odette,” Harlu explained, but Angela already figured. He smiled. His nose scrunched up like it normally did when he smiled, and Angela couldn’t help but feel charmed by it. His blue eyes rolled over the bauble as he continued softly, “She seems rather fond of these knickknacks nowadays.”

There were trinkets all over the living room and all over the house really. Odette kept most of them in cabinets with glass windows, but there were a few perched on end tables and high shelves. Angela had always known her Grama to have them but apparently that hadn’t always been the case. Maybe it was an age thing. Maybe people just because more attached to the little things once they turned old and gray, or maybe it was a grandparent thing. It seemed a lot like a grandparent trait because Angela recalled her friend’s grandmother to having a lot of clocks in her house, and another friend’s grandfather to own a bunch of statues big and small.

Harluthenax’s eyes were a deep blue when he turned to look at her, and he whispered with a smirk, “Don’t tell her it’s here. It’ll be our secret.”

“She’ll like it,” Angela told him honestly.

“She used to have a white cat,” Harlu mentioned. “His name was Kisses. He was such a boring and annoying, little thing. He hated everybody except for Odette. He’d lie on the rug in the kitchen when she was cooking or doing laundry and would lie on the end of her bed at night.”

There was a small pause before Angela wondered quietly, “What happened to him?”

The smile slipped off Harlu’s face, and he shrugged. “He ran away. The front door was left open one day, and none of us could find him.”

Angela nodded and stood there admiring the white cat on the bookshelf for a minute longer while Harluthenax walked back towards the front door. A frown tugged down the corners of Angela’s mouth, and her brow pinched down in confusion when a thought came to mind. She stopped him by asking, “Wait. When did you get the money to buy this?”

A grin pulled tight Harlu’s lips. “I didn’t,” he admitted, seemingly proud before he disappeared out of the door.
