Author: Shadowstar
Story:  The Academy
Challenge:  Vanilla 4 (I can't believe you (don't) know how to __)
Rating: PG (a little swearing)
Word Count: 581
Summary:  Two room mates from different backgrounds talking about household chores.
Notes: I have no idea where this is going.  I have this idea of some sort of school/college that people go to but that's as far as it goes.  Hoping writing little pieces about it will help it grow.  So yeah, anything from The Academy could literally be anything for the time being.

“I can’t believe you don’t know how to bake a cake”  Shauna said.
“Well why would I need to know how to bake anything?” Leah asked.  “That’s what the cook was for.  Or one of the other women who worked in the kitchens anyway, I don’t know who actually did stuff like that.”
Shauna rolled her eyes.  “Oh of course, the cook.  Not everyone was rich enough to have people to do their cooking for them you know.”
“I know that,” Leah said.  “But we were so I never learned to cook.  I wouldn’t even know how to boil an egg let alone make a cake.  What am I going to do Shauna?”  The last was a wail.
Shauna sighed.  “Well I’ll just have to help you learn won’t I?  Don’t think I’m going to be doing all the cooking for the next five years.  It’s not hard to learn to make simple meals so there’s no excuse for you not sharing that chore as well as the others.”
“Others?” Leah asked.  “Like what?”
Shauna stared at her for a moment.  “Like everything.  Sweeping the floors, dusting the furniture, cleaning the toilet…”
“Cleaning the toilet?” Leah sounded horrified.  “Oh I can’t do that!  I really can’t!”
“You can and you will,” Shauna said grimly.  “There’s only two of us Leah and as long as it’s done regularly it’s not that bad a job.  At least there are no guys here pissing everywhere and blocking the damn thing with their giant turds.”
Leah gagged.  “Don’t.  I’ll be sick.”
“Oh grow up!”  Shauna said.  “Stuff is going to need doing and I can tell you now that I am NOT going to be the only one to do it.  We’re sharing the house so we share the chores, that’s all there is to it.  I’m sorry if that sounds harsh but it’s just the way things have to be.  You understand that right?”
Leah pulled a face but nodded.  “Are you sure I can’t just pay someone to come and do all that sort of stuff for us?”
“With what?” Shauna asked.  “You know the Academy just gives us a set amount of coin per week until we graduate, I don’t think you’ll find you have anything to spare to pay people to do things for you Leah.  This isn’t your daddy’s mansion you know.  You’ve got food to buy, books to buy and god only knows what else we’ve got to fork out for.  We’ll see how far our money goes though, I’ve gotta admit the thought of having someone come in to do all the cleaning really does appeal.”
“When do we find out details like that?” Leah asked.  “You seem to know so much more about this place than I do.  I’d never even heard about it until yesterday morning when I was shipped off here with nothing but the clothes on my back.  Do we ever get to go home?”
“Of course you get to go home,” Shauna said with a smile.  “It’s just a school after all, we get holidays and stuff like that silly.  I think we find out a lot of stuff at the meeting we have to go to this afternoon.  All I know is what I’ve heard from a few others though.  It’s all very hush hush until you actually get accepted here so nobody really knows much until then.  I don’t even know exactly what it is we’ll be learning to be honest.”
