The Inhuman And The Inhumane
The rope bindings rubbed tightly against Kamali's skin as he fidgeted. The skin around his wrists were raw red and tender, but he kept trying to work the binding off despite how secure they were. A woman sat across from Kamali on one of the rocks here in the cave. Her long, black hair fell around her face like silk drapes as she leaned forward with her chin resting in the palm of her hand. Her bloody lips stretched up to the side as her eyes like rubies gleamed at him. A human girl in her early twenties was sprawled out on the ground several feet away from them both. The oil lantern that burned near the older woman's feet cast a dim light, and Kamali could see how there was a puddle of blood around the other's neck where she lied. He didn't need to see it to know she was dead. The stench of blood was too strong in the air for him to think otherwise, and the wind whistling outside the cave wuthered almost as strongly as Kamali's racing heart.
“Quite a trick you pulled there.” The words flowed smoothly off the woman's tongue like a sweet poison, inviting on the surface but deadly at the core. Kamali wondered if all vampires were like this. “You fooled me before.”
Kamali remained silent. His throat felt like sandpaper, and the sudden attention he was getting was causing his heart to try to scramble up the rough walls of his throat. The woman uncrossed her legs and tilted her head back. The smirk didn't leave her face, and a certain slyness twinkled in her eyes. “I can sense it now though. You're not human.”
The wind thrashed outside. The silence stretched on for too long this time and caused goosebumps to cover Kamali's skin. He swallowed thickly before forcing out in acknowledgment, “I'm not.”
“A shifter,” the woman gaped. She was grinning now. “I caught a shifter just like that.” She snapped her fingers for emphasis before rising to her feet.
“What kind of shifter lets themselves get caught so willingly? I realized it earlier before I fed. I thought maybe you were planning on attacking when I was preoccupied, but...” Her eyes rolled over Kamali, staring for longer at the place where his hands disappeared behind his back. “You really are stuck. They're just normal, store bought ropes, and you can't get out of them. How peculiar.”
Fear upset Kamali's stomach as she neared him. She leaned over, bending down to his level. Kamali tightly closed his eyes and jerked his head to the side. Her breath was foul, and it only made him feel sicker. “A late bloomer, hm?” She cooed. “I wonder... Your blood? Would it taste rotten or more humanly? How fortunate for me that I get to taste test.”
Kamali thrashed hard, desperately trying to get away from the woman. He kicked and fought against her, but it was pointless. She pinned him down on the ground in seconds and snapped her fangs into his jugular. Pain jolted through his body like electricity, and he screamed. This feeding process wasn't sensual and satisfying like some myths foretold. It was far from painless. Either this was the cold reality, or she was simply cruel at heart. His body spazzed once, twice before he suddenly felt like he was choking. Whether she meant to drain him, Kamali would never know because next he felt the woman being ripped off of him and found himself alone on the ground.
The snarling of a feral animal rang through Kamali's ears as he lied there limply. The snarling mixed with the shrill, angry screeches of the vampire. Kamali's vision blurred momentarily. He couldn't see the uproar taking place, even for the few seconds that the two creatures were in front of him. The shattering of glass sounded through the cave before emerging it in complete darkness. Kamali focused on evening his shaky breath as the commotion continued. The sound of the woman shrieking cut through the air before only the heavy panting of the creature remained. A minute passed before a few disturbing, cracking noises could quietly be heard under the weighted breathing. Then both ceased entirely, and all Kamali could hear was his own heartbeat.
Footsteps crunched quietly against the dirt. Kamali's gaze rolled upward to find a pair of yellow eyes flaring like fire down at him. The voice Kamali heard next was low, rough, and vaguely familiar. It only took seconds for Kamali to recognize him. “You shouldn't be out here.”
This was who he had been looking for in the first place, yet fear began to curl inside Kamali all over again. As Kamali met the menacing stare, he began to second guess his original intentions.
